HDMI connectivity is now standard in nearly all laptops and PCs. Interestingly, HDMI 2.1 was introduced in 2017 and has not seen an update since. This version offered enhanced speeds and refresh rates compared to HDMI 2.0. After a seven-year wait, it appears that HDMI 2.1 will soon be succeeded by HDMI 2.2.

HDMI 2.2 Announcement Soon

The Consumer Electronics Show is scheduled to occur from January 7 to January 11, 2025, in Las Vegas, where the latest version of HDMI is expected to be unveiled. Computer Base, the licensing administrator for HDMI, has communicated to media outlets that significant announcements will be made during this trade event. The HDMI Forum will also hold a press conference on January 6, 2025, to share crucial updates.

The upcoming version, likely referred to as HDMI 2.2, is expected to offer enhanced bandwidth and resolution capabilities, paralleling the advancements seen from HDMI 2.0 to HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.1 currently provides a bandwidth of 48Gbps, enabling support for higher resolutions such as 8K at 60fps and 4K at 120fps. Therefore, HDMI 2.2 is anticipated to surpass these specifications.

Currently, there is no available information regarding the specific features of HDMI 2.2. However, HDMI LA has verified that the forthcoming HDMI standard will incorporate next-generation technology, offering improved resolutions, refresh rates, and superior transmission quality.

At present, there have been no official announcements regarding devices that support HDMI 2.2. However, there is considerable speculation that NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 Series and AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs may incorporate HDMI 2.2 technology. Confirmation of this will only be available when NVIDIA and AMD present their updates at the upcoming CES events. Here is the announcement about the press conference-

“The HDMI forum will announce a new version of the HDMI specifications. The new specifications, featuring next-generation HDMI technology and higher bandwidth will enable a variety of higher resolutions and refresh rates and will be supported with a new HDMI cable. New technologies are enabling higher quality options for content producers such as TV, film, and game studios now and in the future, while also enabling multiple distribution platforms.”
