After dropping one of the most popular video game trailers of all time, Rockstar Games is facing yet another leak. Apparently, someone has leaked the entire source code of GTA V, along with some code of GTA VI.
GTA V’s Source Code Appears Online
Known YouTuber SKizzleAXE shared the screenshots of the leaked source code in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). The source code contains references to an early map of the game. Further, it also suggests GTA 6 was codenamed “Project Americas.”
The Leak Can Potentially Delay GTA VI
The leak also acknowledges the presence of Bully 2, a sequel to the original video game from 2006. In another X post, Gaming Detective says that the extent of the leak isn’t known yet, but it could cause several issues, such as the delay of the upcoming GTA VI.
It might not be too far-fetched to say that it could also lead to security issues in the game, as the source code could end up in the wrong hands. Nonetheless, the studio hasn’t commented on the leak yet.
What Is Source Code, And Why Is It Important?
For those catching up, the source code of a video game, or an app for that matter, is the underlying set of instructions written in a programming language. This code defines how the game functions, much like a blueprint. The source code helps in development, customization, modding, etc. Hence, it is a big deal for a studio like Rockstar Games to undergo such a massive leak, publicly revealing GTA V’s source code.
Rockstar Games Has Suffered Quite A Lot Of Leaks Recently
This is not the first time Rockstar Games has faced a video game-related leak. In November 2023, a database file from GTA V appeared on the internet, which contained several details related to one of the game’s main protagonists, Trevor. Further, GTA VI’s trailer was leaked a couple of hours before the official launch time, which led the studio to postpone the trailer launch.
