Google has been working on its first foldable smartphone for years now as the Pixel division confirmed the same in 2019. However since then, the foldable has not been able to launch due to one or the other reasons. Now, it seems Google is finally gearing up to launch the Google Pixel Fold device in 2023 as the smartphone has started appearing on various listings and certification websites. Recently, Google Pixel Fold was seen on Geekbench which revealed some specs as well. Last month, some renders showing off the design surfaced online. Let us have a look at what we know about Google Pixel Fold so far.

Google Pixel Fold: Price & Launch date

The Pixel Fold is expected to launch somewhere in May 2023 and its price is said to be somewhere around 1799 dollars. Since foldable hardly come in the affordable category, the price seems justified.

Google Pixel Fold Design

The design of the Google Pixel Fold was shown off in November when Front Page Tech shared some renders for the foldable. The renders show a large foldable screen and a smaller outer screen. It is expected to have a glass back, a metal frame, and a large pill-shaped camera module. The first look at the design made everyone feel that it was quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 as it has a cover display on the outside and a larger tablet-like display when folded open.

However, there are some differences in the design. The outer screen on the Pixel Fold looks wider than the Fold 4. When opened, one can see a much bigger screen on the inside which makes it more than Oppo Find N than Galaxy Z Fold 4 in terms of design. The tipster also claims that the Pixel Fold is very heavy and made of glass and metal for a premium feel. There are speaker grilles on top and bottom, a Pixel 7 Pro-like camera bar at the back, and 2 colors to choose from- silver and black. The power button doubles as an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

Tipster OnLeaks claims that unfolded, the Google Pixel Fold will be around 158.7×139.7×5.7mm, which is slightly larger than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold.

Google Pixel Fold Performance & Hardware Expectations

Recently, Google Pixel Fold has been spotted on Geekbench with the codename ‘Felix’. The listing has revealed that the Pixel Fold will be powered by a Tensor G2 chipset which has ARM Cortex-X1 GPU cores clocked at 2.85GHz, two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.35GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The device is confirmed to come with 12GB RAM and runs Android 13. It scored 1047 points in the single-core and 3527 points in the multi-core CPU performance test. The storage is expected to be at least 128GB.

Google Pixel Fold Software

The Pixel Fold will run Android 13 out of the box with the same customizations seen on other Pixels. It will have Material You Theme support, Tensor AI tricks like Magic Eraser, and at least 3 years of future updates. Some foldable-specific tweaks are also expected as Google added quite a few of them with Android 12L in their tablet. These can include multitasking, an app dock at the bottom of the screen, redesigned apps, and more.

Google Pixel Fold Display

Earlier, the Google Pixel Fold was expected to sport a 6.19-inch cover display and an 8-inch foldable display with a 120Hz refresh rate. However, now Tipster OnLeaks has teamed up with HowToiSolve to reveal that the Google Pixel Fold will have a 5.79-inch cover screen and a larger 7.69-inch inner screen, meaning it will function more like the Samsung Galaxy Z fold 4. The inner screen is expected to be an OLED panel.

Google Pixel Fold Camera

The Google Pixel Fold is said to have two 9.5MP selfie cameras within hole-punch display cutouts. On the rear end, it might have a triple camera setup with a 50MP primary, 12MP ultrawide, and a 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. The latest renders show that the device will have huge pixel camera bumps. There is a large bar along the backside of the phone packed with 3 cameras and an LED flash. There is a selfie camera on the front cover screen too.

Google Pixel Fold Battery

The battery is something about which not much is known as of now. The battery has never been a very strong aspect for Pixels, nor are many foldables known for large battery life. Google might find a way to make the Pixel Fold with good battery life, but nothing is known about it as of now.

Google Pixel Fold Vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Which one’s superior?

We have already talked about how Pixel Fold has scored 1047 points in the single-core test and 3527 points in the multi-core test on Geekbench. Although it is not the final score, it is quite lower than what Galaxy Z Fold 4 has achieved. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 scored 1337 points in the single-core and 4028 points in the multi-core CPU test. The performance of Galaxy Z Fold 4 is around 50% faster than the Tensor G2 chipset so Pixel Fold is certainly not expected to beat Galaxy Z Fold 4 in its performance.

Moreover, by the time, Pixel Fold launches, Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be close that will be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that is no match for Tensor G2’s performance, so Pixel Fold will have to perform better in camera and other departments to compete with Samsung Galaxy Foldables.
