The California-based tech giant Google has dropped its latest foldable: the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While the initial rumors regarded the phone as the Pixel Fold 2, Google confirmed the change in naming scheme earlier in July by dropping a teaser. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers a new, refined design, the all-new Tensor G4 SoC, 256GB of storage, and, most importantly, it is available in India.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Design And Durability

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold design

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google’s second book-style foldable smartphone, has a distinct design language. While the secondary display (at the front) and the primary screen feature thin bezels, both have a punch-hole camera. When unfolded, the smartphone features the power and volume buttons on the right frame. At the bottom right frame, you get a speaker grill and a charging port.

As seen in the exclusive Pixel 9 Pro Fold renders published by SmartPrix in February 2024, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has ditched the horizontal camera visor for a square-ish camera module that houses three sensors in two rows (one in the top row and two in the bottom row).

Talking about the phone’s durability, it features Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (on the front and back), aerospace-grade aluminum alloy in the frame, and a multi-alloy steel hinge with a high-strength aluminum alloy cover. Besides, the phone has an IPX8 water resistance rating, which isn’t quite as good as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (review).

  • The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be available in two colors: Obsidian and Porcelain.
  • When folded, the phone measures 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5 (mm).
  • When unfolded, the phone measures 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.1 (mm).
  • The Pixel 9 Pro Fold weighs 257 grams.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Internal And External Display Specifications

Google’s first foldable in India ships with a 6.3-inch (160mm) Actua display with a pixel density of 422 ppi and a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits (peak HDR brightness of up to 1,800 nits). The screen has an aspect ratio of 20:9, features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 cover glass, and supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

When unfolded, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold presents users with an 8-inch (204mm) Super Actua Flex display with a peak brightness of 2,700 nits (peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits) and a pixel density of 373 ppi. The screen is based on LTPO technology, implying that it can switch between a refresh rate of 1Hz to 120Hz. Further, it features a layer of ultra-thin glass that adds structural strength and provides rigidity.

Both the external and foldable screens have a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and support HDR content (with full 24-bit depth for 16 million colors).

Introducing The Tensor G4 SoC

Google Tensor G4 SoC

Under the hood, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold houses the new Tensor G4 SoC, combined with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Internationally, the phone also ships in up to 512GB of storage. Even so, the lack of performance upgrades could disappoint potential buyers, especially since the phone’s competition ships with the most powerful processors for Android smartphones. Even though Google launched the phone with Android 14, they will soon push the Android 15 update to all the Pixel 9 series devices. Anyway, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will receive seven years of operating system and security updates with regular Pixel Drops.

Both the primary and telephoto sensors feature optical and electronic image stabilization, while there’s a multi-zone laster autofocus sensor for the former. On the cover screen, users get a 10MP (f/2.2, 87-degree wide) selfie shooter, while the inner display has a similar camera.

All the cameras can shoot 4K video at up to 60 fps and support features like Video Boost, Night Sight Video, Audio Magic Eraser, Macro Focus Audio, and so on. Photography-centric features include Pro Controls, Add Me, Macro Focus, Hands-Free Astrophotography, Dual Screen Preview, etc. Like the regular Pixels, the foldable also gets Google AI features like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Best Take, and Photo Unblur.

Connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth v5.3, an ultra-wideband chip for accurate ranging, NFC, Google Cast, and a USB Type-C 3.2 charging port.
