Google Pay has collaborated with Pine Labs to bring the ‘Tap-to-Pay’ feature for UPI transactions as well. To date, this feature was only available for credit and debit card transactions.

“Tap to Pay for UPI has profound implications for high traffic retail outlets, with queue management hassles poised to be greatly reduced, and taking digital payments at POS well beyond cards,” said Sajith Sivanandan, Business Head Google Pay.

The facility will only be available to UPI users who have NFC enabled on their Android smartphone to transact using any Pine Labs Android POS terminal across India. This was started with Reliance Retail but now will be available at other places too like Starbucks.

To check if your smartphone has NFC or not, follow the given steps-

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Most Android smartphones have this feature under the Connection settings. It can also be a part of another section based on your OEM. It is best to search for NFC through the bar at the top of the Settings app.
  3. If your phone has NFC, it will be shown in the results. Enable it from there. If there is no NFC, then you can’t use this feature.

Once NFC is enabled, follow the given steps to transact using the new feature-

  1. Unlock your phone.
  2. Tap your phone on the payment terminal.
  3. The Google Pay app will open automatically.
  4. Check the amount to be paid, then click Proceed.
  5. You will be notified once the payment is successful.

Google has launched a support page for Tap to Pay payments in India. Here, the steps to follow are given to help users know how to use this new feature. Google Pay has also clarified that Tap to Pay will not work if you are not registered with Google Pay or if you don’t have a UPI account successfully configured on Google Pay.

“We believe this will further strengthen UPI acceptance in India and appeal to consumers, especially the youth population who have taken a liking for contactless and digital payments,” said Kush Mehra, CEO of Pine Labs about this new feature.
