Searching for something is often quicker than browsing through numerous folders and scrolling through files. While Google Drive has offered a search feature since its inception, enhancements are always welcome.

The latest update to Google Drive allows users to use more search filters to help them find exactly what they need. It introduces three new filters—Owner, Last Modified, and File Type.

The Owner filter displays large bubbles below the file type and last modified filters, making it easy for users to see who owns the files they are searching for. This can be helpful in collaborative environments where multiple users contribute to the same Google Drive.

The File Type filter allows users to narrow down their search to specific types of files such as Documents, PDFs, Photos & Images, Presentations, Spreadsheets, Folders, and Archives.

Finally, the Last Modified filter allows users to filter files based on when they were last modified. While users can currently filter by Today, Tomorrow, and the Last 7 Days, there is unfortunately no option to select a specific date. We hope that Google will add this functionality in future updates to make the feature even more versatile and useful.

One thing that I didn’t like about the new search filters is that they are displayed in a single row (that is scrollable), which does not give away for an intuitive design.

Again, we hope that Google will consider separating the File Type and Last Modified filters into two rows and possibly allowing users to choose a specific date for the last modified filter, making the interface more user-friendly.

Nevertheless, the new search filters in Google Drive are a welcome addition, making it easier for users to find the files they need. The update is available to all Google Workspace users, as well as those with personal Google accounts.

The update has been rolled out on the web (drive.google.com) as well the mobile apps. If you are using Android, go ahead and install the latest update from the Google Play Store.
