Gmail’s Quick Reply Button Gets a Redesign on Android Devices

After months of testing, Google has finally started rolling out the redesigned ‘Quick Reply’ button on Android devices. Through this redesign, Google aims to streamline the process of replying to emails in your inbox. Currently, there are pill-shaped buttons at the bottom of messages. The redesign will eliminate the need for scrolling.

As mentioned above, the new update has ditched the pill-shaped buttons for Reply, Reply All and Forward that were earlier present at the bottom of the screen. There is now a docked text field permanently placed above the persistent bottom bar in Gmail. This new layout allows users to start typing their responses immediately upon opening the mail. They don’t need to scroll down and switch screens. For users who want to have a full-screen view for typing longer replies, the text field can be expanded with a simple tap.

This redesigned button offers a more efficient and convenient way to respond to emails, especially for quick or short replies. This is because the docked text field offers easy access and doesn’t interrupt the flow of checking the inbox. The attachment button can be found on the left side of the text field so adding photos, documents, audio, etc. to your emails is convenient as well.

The full reply menu can also be accessed with options like Reply All, Forward, and Change Recipients by tapping on the three vertical dots next to the reply bar.

The new Quick Reply Redesign is slowly making its way to Gmail users with version 2024.05.05.x with phased rollouts. This means you might see a redesign on one Gmail account but not others.

The Button was unveiled alongside the updates to Google Messages and Home which signals Google’s commitment to refining the communication tools even more. A report by 9to5Google claims that the traditional pill-shaped buttons for actions like “Reply All” have been replaced and some users miss the ability to easily forward emails or send emojis. This redesigned interface will focus on speed and convenience for such responses.
