Explained: What is OPPO’s Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video system?

Technology brands love to match their innovations with befitting big, bold terms and thus with every new launch comes new tech jargon to wrap our heads around. OPPO recently started highlighting its Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video system ahead of its Reno5 Pro launch. That may sound like a frightful mess but is actually quite exciting.

Well, OPPO claims to have developed a new technology where it is pairing competent hardware with flexible software, and smart algorithms which will significantly improve the video quality and portrait effects.

This FDF system has two powerful driving engines – Quality Enhancement Engine and Portrait Perception Engine.

The Quality enhancement engine is responsible for adjusting the camera to take the best possible footage and further has two components – AI Highlight Video and Ultra Steady 3.0. Of these, the AI Highlight Video understands a scene and adjusts camera settings accordingly.

AI highlight video employs a handful of AI algorithms aka Fusion Algorithm Framework. It adjusts brightness (Adaptive Brightness enhancement), determines dynamic range (Adaptive Dynamic Range) and intensity of noise reduction (Adaptive Noise reduction) to enhance the quality of video recording.

The dynamic range enhancements are done using Dynamic Range Conversion (DRC) and Filmic Tone Mapping (FTM) algorithms applied to each frame and followed by Multi-frame HDR Fusion algorithm.

Adaptive noise reduction enhancements use multi-step Temporal Noise Reduction and Spatial Noise Reduction Algorithms to deliver AI highlight videos.

The Ultra Steady Video 3.0, on the other hand, is an electronic video stabilization trick.

Now about the Portrait Perception Engine. Well, this one especializes in portrait videos. It has three segments including Scene Design Manager, AI Modeling, and Portrait Processing for accurate processing, tailored optimization for better portrait videos.

Is this Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video system really effective? Well, our guess is as good as yours. OPPO’s pitch seems really exciting but it remains to be seen how effective FDF proves in real life and if it really make a difference. Let’s hope it proves more than a marketing gimmick. All of us will get to witness it in upcoming OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G which launches on January 18 in India with Dimensity 1000+ Soc at its core.
