Nothing has long been rumored to be working on an affordable version of the Phone (2), called the Phone 2a. A few weeks ago, we also leaked the specifications and wallpapers of the device. Now, the company’s CEO has affirmed the arrival of a new smartphone via his social media account, but has he confirmed it to be the Phone 2a?
Carl Pei Teases A “New Phone”
On January 1, 2024, Nothing’s CEO Carl Pei teased the launch of a new phone through his official X (formerly known as Twitter). In the tweet, Pei starts by writing “New Year New Me” and goes on to write “New Phone.” Further, Pei shares a pixelated image. Ultimately, the post only confirms that the company will launch a new phone but doesn’t mention the model or the launch timeline.
Is It The Phone 2a Or The Phone (3)?
For the last few days, Nothing was rumored to be working on a smartphone called the Phone (2a). On the flip side, the tweet could also refer to the purported Phone (3) that should be launched this year, given the company’s previous record of launching Phone (1) and Phone (2). Nonetheless, the company should announce the phone at a Mobile World Congress 2024 event. The “Nothing To See” event will take place on February 27, 2023.
Nothing Phone 2a Leaked Specifications
Unlike the Phone (3), there’s a lot of information available about the Phone 2a, which slightly turns the scale in its favor. For instance, the Phone 2a is said to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the smartphone should run on the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC, combined with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
Regarding optics, the handset could feature a 50MP primary sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide sensor. The front camera on the device could be a 32MP Sony IMX615 sensor. Further, the Phone 2a has also appeared on the Bureau Of Indian Standard’s website, indicating that it has already received the regulatory certification. Hence, there’s a good chance that Nothing’s next phone, which Pei teased, can be the Phone 2a after all.
