Corning has announced a new version of Gorilla Glass for budget as well as mid-range smartphones. The new tough Corning Gorilla Glass 7i will offer protection to affordably priced smartphones and has been designed to be stronger against drops and scratches compared to other glasses.

Let us have a look at what Corning Gorilla Glass 7i can do and which phones will come with this protective glass.

Corning Gorilla Glass 7i: Capabilities

Various tests at Corning labs indicate that Gorilla Glass 7i can survive falls of up to one meter on hard and rough surfaces like asphalt. Other glasses meant for budget and mid-range devices often aren’t able to survive falls even from shorter distances. Gorilla Glass 7i is also claimed to be 2x resistant to scratches compared to competitors.

This Gorilla Glass 7i will ensure that even the owners of budget and mid-range smartphones can enjoy the same level of durability and safety as the premium ones do.

What does Corning feel about Gorilla Glass 7i?

David Velasquez, VP of Corning Gorilla Glass, has emphasized the importance of durability for even budget/mid-range smartphone holders. With Gorilla Glass 7i the company aims to offer a superior level of toughness at the most affordable prices thus helping these consumers keep their devices safe.

The need for Gorilla Glass 7i arose when mid-range devices like Nothing Phone 2a, Poco F6 Pro, Xiaomi Redmi Note 13, Samsung Galaxy M34, and even Galaxy S23 FE had to use Corning Gorilla Glass 5 in 2016. Gorilla Glass 5 being almost eight years old isn’t able to offer the level of toughness needed in today’s scenario. Modern problems needed a modern yet affordable solution and Gorilla Glass 7i is Corning’s answer to it.

Corning Gorilla Glass 7i can also be used for devices other than smartphones like smartwatches that also need durable displays resistant to scratches and falls.

Gorilla Glass 7i exemplifies Corning’s crucial role in advancing glass technology to address the changing demands of every consumer.”

He further stated, “Investing in a smartphone is a substantial decision and Gorilla Glass 7i empowers more consumers to safeguard their investment by providing superior toughness for value and intermediate devices at an affordable price point.

Smartphones to feature Gorilla Glass 7i

It has been confirmed that Oppo will be the first to provide Gorilla Glass 7i in their upcoming smartphones. Although smartphones haven’t been made clear we might find this protection on Oppo’s upcoming A and F Series devices like the Oppo A3 Pro or the Oppo F27 Pro+.
