CMF’s Latest Teaser Showcases A Removable Screw

On June 25, the official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle of CMF by Nothing shared a short video. The four-second video teases the supposed screw on the rear panel of the CMF Phone 1. The video showcases a screwdriver being used to remove it from the back panel. However, what the screw holds in place isn’t entirely clear.

It Could Be A Removable Back Plate

Rumors suggest that CMF has equipped its first phone with a removable back plate, which can be unscrewed and replaced at any given point without expert supervision. If true, the removable back plate could add a unique customization option. On the flip side, the phone might not appeal to everyone, especially those who don’t like to mess with their gadgets and use them the way they came.

Removable Exterior Shells Aren’t Entirely New

The concept of removable back plates (or an exterior shell) isn’t entirely new. In the past, we’ve seen Samsung introducing customizable back covers for their Flip series. However, the most relevant example would be the exterior plates for PlayStation 5. Sony equips the stock unit with white plates while allowing buyers to get more colorful options as paid accessories. Will Nothing launch new customizable plates for the CMF Phone 1?

The Company Could Also Sell First-Party Back Plates

In our opinion, CMF should sell first-party back plates in various colors and designs. It might provide buyers the option to customize their back plate or choose from a given set of templates. Further, it isn’t clear if removing the back plate will allow users to access the internal components of the smartphone, including the battery, motherboard, etc. However, the speculation relies on rumors about the removable part being a back plate, and hence, readers should take this with a pinch of salt.

CMF Phone 1 Specifications (Expected)

The CMF Phone 1 could arrive with a 6.7-inch OLED screen (120Hz), run on the Dimensity 7300 SoC, and feature a 50MP primary camera on the rear panel. We’re also expecting to see the smartphone in different storage models. Stay tuned for more details about CMF’s first smartphone.
