WhatsApp has always been a paradise for cybercriminals to target innocent users. Now, again the platform is being used for a scam by using the name of MTNL. The fraudsters are utilizing the name and logo of MTNL to scam people by telling them that their SIM will get blocked if they don’t complete their KYC.

Users who are getting trapped in the scam end up giving their personal details that are further being used to blackmail them for money. In a tweet, the Delhi Police has mentioned that a considerable hike in these type of cases has been registered in the last few days. As per the tweet, the victims are getting WhatsApp messages where they are asked to share their details.

The message goes like this, ‘dear customer, your MTNL Sim card Addhar card, e-KYC has been suspended. Your Sim card would be blocked within 24 hours. Call immediately.’ you can easily detect fraud messages if you have a look at their language errors.

However, there are a few key points that will save you from getting duped at any stage by these scamsters. Make sure you follow them and stay digitally safe. These points have been shared by the Delhi Police.

What you should do to avoid getting scammed?

  • First things first, don’t share any of your personal data digitally with unknown or dubious sources.
  • Don’t tap any unverified links, especially those that come from unknown numbers.
  • Avoid installing malicious apps as they are emerging as the major source of committing data fraud.
  • MTNL never carries any kind of KYC verification via WhatsApp, so it would be better if you ignored those messages.

Note: In case you think you have shared your data with any fraud organization or applications, immediately report the same at your nearest police station or call 1930 (cyber cell helpline number).

Bonus point: In case you have downloaded any app and allowed it to access your contacts and media, then remove all the permissions by visiting the settings. These permissions allow the application to access all your data.
