Until last year none of us really talked about the screen refresh rate on the phones, at least not on mainstream phones. All this chatter around the higher smartphone display refresh rate started when the Razer phone and Razor Phone 2 debuted with a 120Hz refresh rate screen.
Soon Asus joined the bandwagon with a 90Hz refresh rate display in ROG phone. However, the ultimate push for higher screen refresh rate happened with the launch of OnePlus 7 Pro (review) and with billboards across the country advertising its ‘smooth’ 2K AMOLED screen. OnePlus later adopted the same refresh rate with the more affordable 7T (review).
Almost all popular Android OEMs are now set to adopt the technology. Google Pixel 4 already has 90Hz refresh rate (adaptive), Samsung will integrate the same with the Galaxy S11 (as may be presumed with 120fps display support on Exynos 990), and Asus already has a 120Hz screen on its aggressively priced ROG Phone 2 (review).
This doesn’t, however, mean that you will be able to leverage additional frame rates with gaming. Even if the phones maintain 90Hz refresh with gaming, most of the popular Android games like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile can’t really push beyond 30 or 60 frames per second.

While Tencent and Activision are yet to come with support for gameplay above 60fps, Google Play store has games that support all the way up to 120fps. Traffic rider is 60 fps, I know cuz I have a fps counter from Samsung game booster plugin, and it says 60 fps, I have the galaxy s20 on 120 fps….
