In preparation for WWDC 2023, Apple is gearing up to unveil a series of significant announcements, including the highly anticipated M2 MacBooks. However, recent reports suggest that the tech giant has already begun development on its next-generation M3 chips. Here’s what we know so far.

Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, disclosed insider information regarding Apple’s progress with the upcoming M3 chips. According to data obtained from an App Store developer and shared with Power On, the variant currently being tested is the M3 Pro chip.

Apple M3 Pro Details Leaked

Sources indicate that the alleged M3 Pro chip boasts an impressive configuration, featuring 12 CPU cores and 18 GPU cores, along with a substantial 36GB of RAM. The chip is rumored to consist of 6 high-performance cores and 6 efficiency cores, mirroring the M2 Pro design. This suggests a similar leap in performance, comparable to the transition from the M1 Pro to the M2 Pro. Additionally, the M3 Pro chipset is expected to include an extra 4GB of RAM compared to its predecessor. Leaked information further suggests that Apple is testing the chip in conjunction with an upcoming MacBook Pro running on the forthcoming macOS 14.

Based on this data, it is reasonable to assume that the M3 Max and M3 Ultra chipsets will see similar upgrades. The M3 Max is projected to feature 14 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, while the M3 Ultra may incorporate an impressive 28 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. To achieve these advancements, Apple is rumored to leverage TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm fabrication process, enabling higher core density in the M3 Pro chipsets.

Apple’s decision to commence testing of the next-generation M3 Pro chip serves multiple purposes. Not only does it generate excitement among users, but it also provides Apple with valuable insights to ensure compatibility with third-party apps upon the chip’s official release.

Gurman previously hinted that the M3 chips are expected to debut alongside forthcoming iMacs, a new 15-inch MacBook Air, iPad Pro, and more within the first quarter of 2024. Furthermore, he speculates that the first M3 Macs, likely featuring the standard M3 chip, could arrive by the end of this year or early next year.

With WWDC 2023 just around the corner, Apple enthusiasts can anticipate a wealth of intriguing information to be unveiled. It is undoubtedly an exciting time for Apple, and we will be sure to keep you informed of the latest developments.
