Apple WWDC 2024 Dates Confirmed: Here’s What You Can Expect

The annual World Wide Developers Conference for Apple is upon us as the company has confirmed the dates for the same. WWDC 2024 will kick off on June 10th, a five-day event ending on June 14th. The event will start with a keynote on day one along with software update announcements like iOS 18, macOS 15, and many more. The Apple microsite for the event has gone live which reveals more about it.

Where to Watch Apple WWDC 2024?

Apple WWDC keynote will livestream via Apple’s YouTube Channel, Apple Website, and Apple TV app. It will also stream on Apple’s Developer App. The keynote will be followed by Platforms State of Union followed by Sessions on various topics. The event will start on June 10th at 10:AM PDT which means 10:30 PM IST.

Apple WWDC 2024: Schedule

Apple WWDC is a developer-centric event and will feature 100+ sessions for developers throughout the week. These sessions will offer opportunities for developers to learn from Apple designers, engineers, and experts about the latest technological tools available and how to use them efficiently.

Swift Student Challenge is also a highlight of the WWDC this time. 50 winners have been recognized for their submissions and have been called to Apple Park for a three-day experience that will include activities designed to inspire and engage them.

The keynote will include the launch of the latest software, Project Greymatter which is a set of on-device AI tools baked into core apps like Safari, Photos, and Notes.

Platforms State of Union will include Apple talking about software announcements made in the keynote in detail.

The event will also include Apple Design Awards winners being announced.

Apple WWDC 2024: What to Expect

AI Innovations

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Apple will talk about its latest AI innovations during WWDC. These new AI features might not be as attractive as ones offered by Microsoft or Google but they will focus on practical applications in real life like auto-generating emojis or transcribing voice memos. A partnership with OpenAI is also on the cards which will lead to deeper integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s OS. Apple has also been in talks with Google to integrate Gemini AI along with being in contact with Anthropic.

A smart Recap tool is expected which will summarize missed texts, notifications, and media like web pages, documents, and news articles helping users manage iOS notifications efficiently.

Voice Memo app is likely to get AI-generated transcription capabilities expanding on currently available features like system-wide captions and voicemail transcripts.

Some new AI features expected on-device are Safari Internet searches, Spotlight search, suggestions for writing emails and texts, retouching photos, emoji generation based on text, and more. Siri is also expected to get upgrades like better functionality on the watch and a more natural-sounding voice.

iOS 18

iOS 18 is expected to be one of the most ambitious upgrades in Apple’s history. iOS 18 will be one of the headliners at the event. Mark Gurman claims that iOS 18 will be the biggest ever all thanks to loads of AI features that it will get. An array of new AI Features are expected across the latest iPhone OS. These include-

  • Custom emojis using generative AI.
  • Smart Recaps of important notifications that were missed.
  • Better Safari web search.
  • Faster Spotlight searches.
  • Photos retouching with AI.
  • Auto-generated playlists in Apple Music.
  • A more customizable Home Screen Experience.
  • Apple will now support the RCS messaging standard to enable smooth communication between iPhone and Android users.
  • Next text features will be added to the Messages app with iOS 18.

Other than AI features, the following updates are expected-

  • Safari will get an updated look and new tools that will include an Intelligent Search option and a Web Eraser Tool.
  • Apple Maps is expected to get topographic maps and an option to save custom routes as an alternative to the pre-selected routes.
  • The calendar app will get seamless integration with Reminder.
  • Photos app will get AI features for editing.
  • Apple Notes will allow recording voice memos and performing complex mathematical operations.

iPadOS 18

Apple iPad owners will also get new features with iPadOS 18. Many iOS 18 features will also be included for iPadOS 18. Other than those, iPadOS 18 is also expected to receive some unique features like Eye Tracking, Music Haptics, Vehicle Motion Cues, Vocal Shortcuts, and more. A built-in Calendar app is also expected for the iPad lineup.

macOS 15

WWDC is also expected to see the macOS 15 version being rolled out. The macOS 15 is said to get features like a new Calendar app integrated with the Notes app, a history tape feature, an updated unit conversation feature, and resizable window capability. Various new accessibility features are also expected to roll out for macOS 15. These include Live Speech Enhancement, Adaptive Voice Shortcuts, Custom Font Sizes App, Freeform App, Revamped Settings Menu, and more.

watchOS 11

Apple is all set to roll out a new OS for smartwatches. The new watchOS 11 will be a minor update as compared to iPad or iOS updates. it is expected to get more health and fitness features, Artificial Intelligence, New Watch Faces, Better Sleep Tracking, and Workout revamp.

tvOS 18

Apple is planning to upgrade its existing TV lineup with the tvOS 18 update. Last year tvOS 17 brought some major updates for Apple TV like FaceTime support, revamped Control Center, Apple Fitness+, Find My to Siri Remote, and more. This time it is expected to get even better. What these updates will be, we’ll find out at the WWDC 2024.

visionOS 2

Since Apple’s latest innovation Vision Pro is available for sale in select markets, the brand is planning to announce an updated version of OS for it. Some new accessibility features are coming for Vision Pro users, which include Live captions enabling deaf or hard-of-hearing users to follow the spoken dialogue in live conversations and app audio. Other features include Dim Flashing Lights, Reduce Transparency, Smart Invert, and more.

HomePod Software Version 18

Updates on software for Apple HomePod and HomePod Mini are also expected to be announced during WWDC 2024. Last, these were updated in 2022 which was not a very significant update. This time the tech giant might bring some big changes to the HomePod lineup.

In a bid to compete with the likes of Google and Microsoft, Apple will aim to balance innovation with security and also enhance privacy levels. Other expected updates are for CarPlay, Xcode, Swift, and TestFlight.
