Last week, Apple halted the development of iOS 18 and the series of other OS titles – iPadOS, macOS 15, and watchOS to eliminate bugs in the current iOS 18 build before moving on. Well, we got some impressive details from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on the halt and how Apple is using AI onboard iOS 18 to leverage better sales out of iPhone 16 in line to debut next year.

It has been two months since iOS 17 officially made its debut alongside the iPhone 15 series. With the iOS 18 development started, Apple is bringing some AI capabilities that will help iPhones stand firm against Google’s ever-increasing suite of AI features including Magic Eraser.

Apple decided to halt development to clean out bugs in the current OS build before moving on with further development. This decision was made by Craig Federighi, Apple’s software engineering chief. The current week-long halt would allow Apple developers to fix bugs and issues with the internal version dubbed as M1 or the first milestone where all the major features are integrated.

To shed light on Apple’s iOS development, it is performance on four milestones each lasting approximately six weeks. Every milestone gets four weeks of development plus two weeks of exterminating bugs. A one-week halt allowed developers to clear out most of the bugs that might be discovered later. Note that this halt won’t affect iOS 18’s timeline which is scheduled to make its appearance at WWDC this coming June followed by a public launch in September next year.

Additionally, Gurman said that the Cupertino-based giant is looking to leverage AI to boost sales of next year’s iPhone 16 series. Note that the previous rumors on larger displays by 0.2” on the Pro models won’t likely make it. This would allow Apple to concentrate on making iOS 18 robust and improve its user experience once it is released alongside the iPhone 16.

Tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) posted on X that the upcoming iPhone 16 will get a revamped Siri as Apple is leveraging LLM to make Siri an ultimate and most powerful killer AI app. Siri will be able to auto-complete sentences and answer field questions using AI. Apart from that, Apple is also working on AI-assisted writing in the Pages app as well as slide deck creation in Keynote. There are auto-generated Apple Music playlists in the works too.

The next year’s iPhone 16 series is gonna be huge with design changes new features and of course, iOS 18. There will be performance and security improvements on the device as Cupertino is gearing up to make the release more compelling than the current gen.
