PC gaming enthusiasts pay attention — AMD has showcased the ‘world’s best gaming CPU’ and ‘by far the most powerful gaming GPU’ they have built. The former refers to the Ryzen 9 5950X, whilst the latter is Radeon RX 6000, which is popularly known as Big Navi. In its grand announcement, AMD chief Dr. Lisa Su divulged the specs, key performance improvements, benchmark scores, and more.

So, let’s get straight into the details.

AMD Zen-3 architecture and Ryzen 5000 CPUs

The Ryzen 5000 series chips are fabbed on the Zen-3 design and a 7nm (TSMC) process. The new microarchitecture boasts a 19% increase in instructions per cycle (IPC), and an average 26% gains in the overall 1080p gaming performance compared to the previous-gen. Meanwhile, the power draw and core-count remain the same.

Compared to Zen-2, the chip layout is revamped into a single eight-core structure with all those cores having access to the whole 32MB shared L3 cache. This will improve latency.

So, AMD vaunts its improved power efficiency, single thread and multi-thread performance, and overall better value than the competition. The only area where it lags behind is the max clock speed. While the top-end Ryzen 5950X is capped at 4.9GHz, Intel’s flagship 10th gen i9-10900K clocks a turbo speed of 5.3GHz.
