OnePlus has long invested in technologies and products that appeal to its customers. OnePlus Open was the first-ever foldable device from this Chinese smartphone maker. It impressed the masses making it among the favorites under the foldable category. Call it so because of its OxygenOS optimized to handle large foldable screens to multitasking to excellent user experience and features that boost your productivity, OnePlus Open made its place in the already crowded market.

As we are almost a year after its launch, fans are eagerly waiting for OnePlus to drop in the sequel or the second-gen foldable. As the nomenclature suggests, the phone will be aptly named ‘OnePlus Open 2’. Thanks to the various rumors and leaks, we can now paint a picture of everything we know about OnePlus Open 2. From display to display to performance and cameras, let us touch these subtopics as we go on explaining everything that has leaked, confirmed, or talked about OnePlus Open 2 in the tech community.

OnePlus Open 2: Design & Display

As aforementioned, we are still a few months away from the OnePlus Open 2 launch. Unfortunately, there haven’t been much of chatter around how the phone would actually look like. We do know that OnePlus is unlikely to bring any major changes in terms of design. It is safe to say OnePlus Open 2 will be akin to the original OnePlus Open.

Take it as a disappointment or OnePlus’ strategy to keep the phone’s pricing on the lower circuit, it is entirely up to you. Yes, redesigning a phone takes a lot of capital and that’s why many of the phones you will see lately have almost the same designs as their predecessors at least for a few generations. For context, OnePlus 12 was similar in design to the OnePlus 11.

Coming back to OnePlus Open 2, the phone will see certain tweaks in its Hasselblad camera but that’s pretty much all. Luckily, the OnePlus Open passed durability tests run by YouTuber JerryRigEverything which gives us enough confidence that the upcoming Open 2 will follow the same wagon especially when a buyer decides to spend a fortune buying the device.

OnePlus Open 2: Performance & Software

The original OnePlus Open is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 launched in 2022. Although it might sound a little out of place since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC was released a few weeks later, we are hoping the OnePlus Open 2 will finally get to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC under the hood. No doubt it will shy away from this year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC if OnePlus sticks to the October’s launch schedule.

Apart from the upgraded chipset, we are hoping OnePlus gets more RAM and storage options akin to Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5. The current one has 16GB+512GB as the sole storage config so getting up to 1TB would be a deal maker for sure.

OnePlus Open 2: Camera

Turns out that OnePlus received a lot of acclaim for its camera tech on-board. OnePlus Open, being a foldable phone, the phone offers a massive a display to capture excellent shots, especially during the daytime (something OnePlus phones have always been able to outperform quite splendidly). For the unversed, the original setup includes a 48MP primary, 64MP 3x telephoto, and 48MP ultrawide at the back calibrated with Hasselblad. At the front, we have a 20MP cover and 32MP primary selfie shooter as well.

Unfortunately, camera specs remain scarce at the time of writing this. We did cover what we wanted with Open 2 in the next section. But hey we want OnePlus to bank on AI to help with processing, contrast, and fine-tuning the colors to get better shots.

We caught some news in the wind that suggests the OnePlus Open 2 will introduce Sony’s LYTIA line or sensors at least for the primary cam. Also, these sensors have shown promising results so we are expecting it to appear across Open 2 as well.

OnePlus Open 2: Battery

The original OnePlus Open arrived with a 4,805mAh battery plus 67W fast charging tech. This time around, OnePlus has the chops to upgrade its charging tech to 150W although Open 2 might not get to that magnitude.

There are news doing the rounds suggesting higher battery size or in other words, a more efficient battery. We hope the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC greases the battery to churn out more power although we will have to check that out.

OnePlus Open 2: What We Want To See!

We have already seen the OnePlus Open which gives us a foundation to build upon our expectations with the next iteration. Turns out there are five things that people are eagerly looking for in the OnePlus Open 2 (not that they have been confirmed yet).

OnePlus Should Add ‘Wireless Charging’

OnePlus hasn’t been too vocal about ‘wireless charging’ on its devices. Yes, the latest phones have the feature but the tech is still unavailable for the majority of its portfolio. With that being said, as the upcoming OnePlus Open 2 is slated to arrive in a few months, fans are eagerly waiting if OnePlus finally acknowledges their request to introduce a wireless charging tech onboard Open 2. The phone will have 67W wired tech, however, having wireless charging would be great. What do you think?

On a Lookout for a Smaller Camera Bump

OnePlus Open had a ginormous camera bump that you can see literally from miles away (just a metaphor though). So, we are hoping OnePlus does reduces the size of the camera bump a tad bit making it easier to put in your pockets.

The Addition of a Stylus Would Be a Great

Would it be wrong to ask for a stylus? Well, OnePlus Open 2 should have an optional stylus support that would improve the overall user experience by a tonne.

Better Dust & Water Resistance

OnePlus Open arrived with an IPX4 water-resistant rating that shows the phone is splash-resistant. It doesn’t have an official ingress rating for dust resistance even though OnePlus maintains the hinges are designed to automatically eject dust trying to get in. With that being said, we are hoping that OnePlus upgrades to an IPX8 rating that gives it a higher resistance against water. The upcoming Open 2 may still shy away from an official ingress rating, however, having upgraded water and dust resistance doesn’t hurt anybody.

An Upgrade to 5x Optical Zoom

Yep, that’s what we are expecting. The original Open arrived with a 3x optical zoom which isn’t arguably bad for a foldable phone. However, a 5x optical zoom would put the Open 2 crosspath with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro – the two bad boys of excellent mobile photography.

OnePlus Open 2: Release Date

The original OnePlus Open made its debut in late October last year after reporting delays. The timeline was – to launch on October 19 followed by availability on October 29.

With that being said, since smartphone makers launch their next upgrade following the same launch schedule, we are hoping the OnePlus Open 2 makes it to the market in October 2024. It is especially possible given there are no major hardware upgrades reported for Open 2 as of writing this.

Some reports suggest we could get our hands on the OnePlus Open 2 a month prior i.e. in September as the Chinese chipmaker is picking up holiday seasons to gain traction in terms of sales. However, take these timelines with a pinch of salt as the company could alter the timeline based on various factors including any big unveiling during this period.

OnePlus Open 2: Price

The original OnePlus Open was priced at $1,700 or INR 1,39,900/- in India which is almost the same as that of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold. However, foldable phones are still inaccessible to more users who might not think about shelling out that exorbitant pricing. Samsung is already at the forefront with talks of a cheaper Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 model slated to arrive this year.

With that being said, the OnePlus Open 2 pricing remains a mystery. However, several sources suggest it could peg the price tag of $1,500 if not less. If the same pricing is reflected in the Indian markets, we could see a potential drop in pricing for foldable phones (aka OnePlus) while there will be an uptick in terms of adoptability.
