Razer Kraken
The first thing people are likely to notice about the Razer Kraken is the design, which is fun and unique. And, let’s face it, any product in Kermit-the-Frog-green is going to get your attention. This PC gaming headset is also available in a black edition, with green accents, if you find the predominantly green model a little too much. But the better news is, this quality gaming headset is not all about looks, it also delivers good sound that competes well with other mid-level gaming headsets. As you would expect for gaming headphones in this price range, there are not a lot of bells and whistles. Audiophiles interested in Razer headphones should take a serious look at the higher tech, pricier Razer Tiamat, which is also featured in our PC gaming headset reviews, but there is a huge population of gamers out there who will be more than happy with what this product has to offer. The Kraken’s lightweight design is definitely one of its strengths. Razer markets this product at its website as “the most comfortable headset ever,” and while that designation is up for debate, it is darn comfy. The headband is padded with memory foam, encased in breathable mesh and nylon, and the ear cups will cover just about any ear nicely. Not surprisingly, the Kraken doesn’t include the extras we have come to expect with the higher-end models like a wireless option and surround sound. It provides great sound for gaming, but, once again, audiophiles would be disappointed by the overall output. The bass is powerful, and may even be a bit overpowering for some tastes. The middle range is also solid, while the upper range lags just a little behind. It’s virtually unnoticeable while gaming, however. Both the soundtrack and the chat come in loud and clear, but the lack of high frequencies is more noticeable when listening to music. There is no in-line volume control for gaming or chat. You can mute the mic by retracting it. This is a good PC gaming headset that is worth a look for anyone in the market for an affordable, high functioning PC gaming headset. Razer’s website is very user-friendly. A few clicks will take you right to the FAQs for this product, which will answer many of the questions you may have. You can contact them via email if you have additional questions and they will respond in a reasonable time.
