Electronics giant Apple will soon be offering ‘Made in India’ iPhones. Apple India has reached an agreement with the Karnataka govt to setup an assembling unit in Bengaluru.

This move makes India only the third nation world over to assemble iPhones, thus confirming its position as one of high value to the California-based company.

The company has chosen Taiwanese company Wistron Corp. as its manufacturing partner in India and the company will be entrusted with the task of making phones in the first phase of Apple’s operations.

The construction of a manufacturing plant will be done in the Peenya Industrial area of Bengaluru.

As of now, Apple makes use of chain outlets, Imagine as well as iStores, to sell its products in the country.

Along with Karnataka, several other states including Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana  were in the running for the deal to set up the Apple manufacturing facility.

Alongside the industrial hub of Peenya, the govt. is looking to collaborate with Apple to open up units in other areas as well, citing the want to create a conducive environment for the leading companies in the world, such as Apple itself.

Seemingly, the company intends to start its production for the Indian market as early as April and though it has been mum about its plans in India, rumors pertaining to the now confirmed manufacturing plant have been rife since the last couple of months.

“Apple’s decision on initial manufacturing in Bengaluru has further enhanced the reputation of Bengaluru as the most preferred destination for foreign investment and further validation of the State Government Policies aimed at fostering manufacturing, innovation and investments in Karnataka.”

– Priyank Kharge, Information Technology (IT) minister, Karnataka
