Apple’s software engineers and user interface teams are focusing on one of the most significant operating system overhauls ever. The redesign will change how iOS, iPadOS, and macOS look and make them more consistent (along with Apple’s other software platforms). Expected to be showcased at WWDC 2025, the changes could roll out as part of iOS 19 later this year.

Delay In Siri Upgrades And Sluggish Sales
Most recently, Apple indefinitely delayed the long-awaited Siri updates due to functionality-related concerns. Though there were reports about the Cupertino giant releasing the on-screen functionality and other improvements as part of the next iOS update, that isn’t going to happen anytime soon (or at least that is what it looks like at the moment).
Further, reports suggest that Apple’s global iPhone sales have dropped 5% in the final quarter of 2024. The company is doing well in India, where it achieved a spot in the top-five brands in terms of shipments in January 2025, but that isn’t the case in its other markets.

A Software Overhaul Could Attract New Customers
Given that the iPhone is the company’s key asset, it believes that a “breakthrough new interface” can help increase the demand. As mentioned in Mark Gurman’s latest report (via Bloomberg), the iOS redesign will change how the visual elements like icons, menus, windows, and system buttons look.
Moreover, the update will simplify how iPhone, iPad, or Mac users interact, navigate, and control their devices. Gurman also says that the new design is inspired by visionOS, the user interface on Apple’s mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro. For those catching up, visionOS uses circular icons, shows simplified windows, and translucent panels for ease of navigation.
However, given that visionOS is a three-dimensional operating system, Apple can’t use all its elements in the two-dimensional iOS. Even though the Vision Pro didn’t perform well as a product, the effort that the company has put into developing its software should eventually pay off (as it might bring a wave of freshness to other devices).

The Changes Will Roll Out As Part Of iOS 19
Like every year, Apple should showcase these changes during the WWDC 2025, which should be held sometime in June. As mentioned, the updates will be a part of the next-generation operating systems: iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16. Gurman highlights how the iPhone’s upcoming operating system is codenamed “Luck,” while that of macOS 16 is “Cheer.”
The journalist stresses that the revamp isn’t limited to a new design language or some visual changes. Instead, it is the “most significant upgrade” to Mac since 2020 (since the launch of Big Sur) and iPhones since 2013 (since iOS 7). While the updates will make the operating systems look more consistent, they won’t merge them entirely.
Either way, we’ll have to wait for WWDC 2025 to see how the company implements the changes.
