OnePlus 3T is less than a month old and talks regarding who shall succeed this fantabulous device have already begun. The Rumor mills have started contributing to the speculation about what we can expect from OnePlus 3T (review) successor. Here’s what have been buzzing in tech corridors about upcoming OnePlus smartphone:

No, It’s Not OnePlus 4

Logically the OnePlus 3 successor should be OnePlus 4 but if the rumors are true, the budding Chinese brand will skip number 4 due to ‘tetraphobia‘, about which you might not have heard yet, but it is very common in some East Asian countries which consider number ‘4’ unlucky as it symbolizes death.

This is the reason many believe OnePlus 5 will be launched in 2017 instead of the 4. If this happens it won’t be one isolated incident. In the past, various superstitious brands including Sony have adopted a similar strategy. Recently, Vivo skipped on the V3 immediate successor to launch V5 aka ‘selfie expert’. Interestingly, Vivo and OnePlus are both ventures of the same BBK Electronics group.

OnePlus 5 Design

The current generation OnePlus smartphones – 3 & 3T – both flaunts uni-metal chassis which certainly feels great. However, it could change with OnePlus 4 or should I say OnePlus 5. As per posts on Weibo, OnePlus could opt for a ceramic body in its next offering. Similar to what we earlier witnessed in OnePlus X and more recently in Mi MIX.

Chassis carved out of ceramic offer certain rewards. They are comparatively stronger, can withstand scratches and corrosion, and can handle higher temperatures. On the downside, they are relatively expensive and thus will notch up the production cost.

OnePlus 5 Display

Since Google and Facebook are putting their weight behind Virtual Reality (VR) technology, it is expected to become a mainstream feature in 2017 and being a flagship smartphone OnePlus 4/OnePlus 5 is expected to be daydream ready phone. As per the speculation, OnePlus is expected to increase display resolution from Full HD to Quad HD with pixel density of 554ppi in next killer phone. Currently, most of the flagship smartphones from competitor brands flaunt a 2K display, but OnePlus has adamantly stuck to Full HD screens so far.

OnePlus 5 Hardware

As per the speculations, OnePlus 4 could be powered by Qualcomm’s next generation flagship chipset – Snapdragon 830 or 835 SoC matted with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Qualcomm has already announced its next year flagship chip, the Snapdragon 835, that will support Quick Charge 4.0 technology.

OnePlus 5 Camera

If prevailing market trends and reports are to be believed, OnePlus might finally embrace dual rear camera setup which we saw in brands like LG, Huawei, and Apple this year. If it turns out to be true, it will be interesting to see how OnePlus implements its dual camera setup.
