Google’s Pixel lineup is about to get a refresh. Later this year, the company is expected to hold an event to launch the Pixel 9 series. The smartphone, in particular, will be powered by the Tensor G4 SoC, the fourth generation of Google’s in-house mobile processors. While we’re yet to find out how the G4 SoC performs in the upcoming flagship, details about the Tensor G5 SoC have already surfaced on the internet.

Tensor G5 SoC To Utilized TSMC’s Fabrication Technology

According to a report by Android Authority, Google’s Pixel 10 series will ship with the Tensor G5 SoC. However, unlike the current iteration of the Tensor chipset, the G5 will be made by TSMC, the same company that manufactures mobile platforms for Qualcomm and Apple. This will make the Tensor G5 the first chip not based on Samsung’s fabrication technology.

The Upcoming Chip Could Offer Significant Improvements

Tensor G5 SoC in development

Google’s shift from Samsung to TSMC is important for multiple reasons. First, it shows how the Korean tech giant hasn’t improved its processors over time. Issues like poor thermal management and inferior efficiency have existed on the company’s chips for quite some time. For instance, the Exynos chips on the flagship Galaxy S24 don’t perform as well as the Snapdragon chip.

For years, the Alphabet-owned company has placed its phones right next to the most expensive flagships money can buy. While they’ve performed well in several aspects, such as cameras, screens, and the presence of intuitive AI features, they haven’t done well in terms of raw performance and efficiency. This is what Google aims to fix with the upcoming Tensor G5 SoC.

Details Confirmed Via Shipping Details Of A Prototype

The publication also shares a publicly available shipping manifest that confirms Google is already working on the Tensor G5 SoC. The goods’ description section reveals details about the processor, including its codename (Laguna or “LGA” as mentioned in the listing), packaging tech (inFO POP) used in the chip, its manufacturer (TSMC), the RAM size (16GB), and so on.

Since Google needs more time to set up the new chip and optimize the software, it makes sense that the company is testing it early. To sum up, the Tensor G5 SoC in the Pixel 10 should significantly improve its overall power and performance. However, since the handset featuring the chip is a year and a half away from launch, a lot could change. Stay tuned for more information about the upcoming Pixel smartphones and other tech news.
