Update: Sony has clarified that the tweet was a mistake, and it has now been deleted.

Even when there is still some time before 5G networks to get operational, 2019 will be the year of 5G smartphones. In fact, Sony just officially announced that their upcoming Xperia XZ3, that will go up for pre-orders by the end of September, will support 5G networks and might very well be the first 5G phone we get to see.

Who else is making 5G Phones?

Sony isn’t the only one racing to 5G. Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi Mix 3 is confirmed to have 5G support (and a mechanical slider), and Samsung has reportedly added a 5G Version for the upcoming Galaxy S10 as well.

Also, Lenovo’s Moto Z3 launched last month will get a 5G mod with Snapdragon X50 modem and millimeter wave components and can be used to clip 5G support to a regular Moto Z phone.

In fact, Qualcomm just confirmed in an interview that all ‘top-tier’ OEMs will launch 5G phones by April 2019 – a transition that was initially expected to happen in 2020.

In India, we don’t expect 5G to become relevant for the next two years, but 5G is a nice metric to add to the spec-sheet, which is why it’s natural that smartphone OEMs will be rushing to integrate the technology.
