Oppo first showed off its under-display camera back in 2019, and a few years later, it is back with the latest iteration of this in-screen tech. Compared to the early showcase, the company claims this time the camera portion is incorporated “without compromising the integrity of the screen”. In other words, this doesn’t suffer from lower pixel density in the front camera region. The company claims to have shrunk the pixel size of that area without reducing the number of pixels present to ensure the same 400 PPI sharpness as the rest of the screen.

Here, take a look —

Further, Oppo has also employed a 50% thinner transparent screen wiring inside. Also, now each pixel gets its own circuit for local control of colors and brightness. This apparently results in a mere 2% deviation from the source. Differently put, you won’t be able to easily discern the difference in colors and brightness of that region from the rest of the screen.

Oppo has also paid attention to allay any risk of burn-in by using an anti-burn-in algorithm and 1-to-1 pixel architecture. This is said to extend the screen longevity by 50% compared to the earlier implementation.

Algos like AI diffraction reduction, AWB, and HDR are utilized in the camera processing too which should endow better results out of the selfie shooter. You can get an idea of what to expect from the above image shared by the company.

For a prototype, this looks impressive. Still, we hold back our excitement until we see an actual device sporting this tech. As of now, the company hasn’t given a word on when we could expect the first Oppo under-screen camera phone.
