OPPO Reno series has created a legacy of its own with flagship-grade cameras, uber-cool design and dependable performance over the years. Under the Reno series banner, we saw many firsts including a shark fin design, the world’s first 44MP dual punch hole camera, borderless sense screen and a lot more. To carry forward the legacy, OPPO recently launched the OPPO Reno8 in India. The device ticks all the boxes from camera to design to performance and is the ultimate flagship device in its segment.

As per our short-term experience with the smartphone, it is a Portrait Expert no doubt. Without any further ado, let’s briefly discuss all the OPPO Reno8 aspects based on our experience with the smartphone:

Notch-up your photography skills with the portrait expert

OPPO, to rejuvenate the photography experience of the users, has offered multiple new features in the OPPO Reno8. Starting with the camera configuration, the smartphone comes with a triple rear camera system, including a 50MP Sony IMX766 snapper, 8MP wide-angle camera, and a 2MP macro snapper.

The camera hardware seems quite promising and is also aided by OPPO’s smart imaging software. All three sensors at the back produce high-quality images and capture all the minute details of the scene too, with the help of All Pixel Omni-directional PDAF tech. It uses the pixels of the image sensor for both focusing and capturing.

It has a Binocular camera module to create the perfect angles while taking a photograph and the ring flash just adds another star to the shoulder of the phone.

Moreover, our experience with the device puts a stamp on the fact that it also provides breathtaking photographs at night by absorbing the ambient light and focusing heavily on the subject. This happens because the quadra binning algorithm offered by OPPO receives 60% more light and 35% less noise.

OPPO Reno8 flaunts a 32MP front camera, one of the best in its price range. It is a Sony IMX709 shooter that delivers decent shots irrespective of the scenario.

The portrait mode of the front camera is also brilliant as we got some of our best portrait selfies while using it. A major highlight regarding the sensors is that they are pretty much improved as compared to the predecessors of the phone.

OPPO has introduced a series of new photography features with the Reno series like the Night Portrait, AI Portrait Retouching, Ultra Night Video, and ULTRA HDR video. All these features enhance different aspects of your photographs and videos recorded by the smartphone. Especially the night portrait mode, it can perform three-channel noise reduction for R/G/B in the RAW image format. While testing the model, we came to a conclusion that the smartphone can easily produce professional-grade photographs at night, or you can say, in low-light settings.

Apart from that, the portrait mode of the handset helped us get some of the best portrait shots with a whopping number of 22-level adjustments. We recorded a video or two while being in motion, thanks to the Hyperlapse mode, the videos were quite stable. And trust me, we were mesmerized by the way the bullet time effect comes into play when you activate the slow-motion mode on the device.

Got the swag to sway you on your feet

Reno8, just like earlier Reno series phones, keeps the flag high in the sky when it comes to design. What really impresses us about the Reno8 is its new colour options. OPPO ships it in Shimmer Black and Shimmer Gold both of which look equally mesmerizing, more so in person. The gradient finish on the rear panel shimmers when looked at from different angles. Kudos to OPPO for ensuring that they remain resistant to finger smudges.

OPPO has once again displayed its design prowess and attention to detail here. The OPPO Reno8 has a streamlined unibody design as the camera module is joined with the back panel without any visible joints. That’s not all, they have also ensured that the phone has an excellent in-hand feel and to ensure that, they itched a fine smooth texture on the back panel.

It also ticks another the right box with its slim waistline and lightweight. The Reno8 measures just 7.67mm in thickness and 179 grams in weight. It is in fact, one of the OPPO’s slimmest Reno phones ever launched in India. While holding the device in hand you will also feel its compactness and lightweight. We can say that it is perfect for one-hand operations. OPPO has been investing a lot of effort in the finishing of the handset which has paid off well as you get a device that looks and feel premium.

Power-packed performance on the go

Talking about the performance, the smartphone is a complete beast with high performing processor. It runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 processor that is built on a 6nm node process following 1+3+4 architecture.

Stats nerd will be happy to note that the CPU performance of the device is 40% better than its predecessor, AI performance and 80% better, and the GPU performance has a whopping increase of 106%. OPPO’s hard work to improve power efficiency has paid off as the Reno8 is 20% more power efficient as compared to Reno7.

To further enhance the performance, the handset packs a Super-conductive VC liquid cooling system. The cooling area of the device has also increased by 16.8%. We played APEX Legends Mobile on it for half an hour without taking a break, and there were no throttling or heating issues. The touch sampling rate of the screen can also be increased to 1000Hz to get a one-of-a-kind gaming experience.

Monstrous battery with lightning-fast charging tech

The OPPO Reno8 is backed by a massive 4500mAh battery that easily lasted us more than a day. While running the phone for long hours, we noticed that the Battery Health Engine offered by the brand makes it last without any battery drainage issues. OPPO’s proprietary BHE (Battery Health Engine) technology is an understated feature which ensures your phone’s battery has a longer lifespan.

The Reno8 battery is rated to last for 1,600 charge/discharge cycles which is more than user 1000 charge cycles that we get to see in most smartphones including much more premium devices.

That’s not all, the Reno8 offers 5-star charging protection features such as Adapter overload protection, Flash charging condition identification protection, Interface overload protection, Battery current/voltage overload protection, and Battery fuse protection to ensure consumer and the device remains safe all the time.

Results of these OPPO battery tech enhancements are visible with the Reno8 charging times.

It takes advantage of its 80W SUPERVOOCTM flash charger, which comes bundled in the box, to refill the battery in a jiffy. It charges the smartphone from zero to 100% in only 28 minutes. When testing the feature manually, the claims were genuine, give or take a couple of minutes. In just 5 minutes, that device gets charged up to 25% and can go on straight for two hours while running heavy games. All in all, the OPPO Reno8 is a battery and charging champion in its class.

Immersive AMOLED display for Cinematic experience

To me, one of the most important aspects of any smartphone is its display. Thankfully, OPPO has not cut any corners here and packed in an immersive screen on the Reno8. The screen is surrounded by extremely narrow, elevating the screen-to-body ratio all the way to 90.8 per cent. It gets a mesmerizing 6.4-inch AMOLED display complemented with a 90Hz refresh rate.

The smartphone has a 180Hz touch sampling rate which is a boon for gamers as they can smoothly play games on the phone that require a high frame rate. We tested Asphalt 9 on the device, and the experience was mind-blowing because of the snappy interface.

Not only this, but the handset also has the necessary certification to play HD content on popular OTT apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. To make sure that you don’t stress your eyes OPPO has also offered the SGS Eye Care display certification which seems to be effective as we never felt eye fatigue while using the phone for long hours. In addition to that, there is the 01 Ultra Vision Engine feature which enhances images to make them more pleasing to the eyes.

ColorOS12.1 is all about privacy and innovative features

The OPPO Reno8 runs on the Color OS12.1 based on Android 12 which is loaded with features which we haven’t

Seen before. One such distinctive feature of Color OS 12.1 is its unique ‘Notification Smart Anti-Peeping’ feature that prioritises your privacy. It hides message notifications whenever it detects someone else is peeping into our phone’s screen.

That’s not all, there is also Air Gestures which work swiftly and accurately. We tried these updated Air gestures with Youtube to play or pause videos and they worked as advertised. Not just that, you can also scroll up & down on most of the popular apps like Facebook, Instagram and a lot more. I also managed to answer calls by just waving at my Reno phone! This should be especially helpful if your hands are moist, if you’re eating, or if you’re otherwise occupied.

While testing the multi-screen connect feature, we got to know how comfortable it can be to create phone clones and use the necessary apps from any device like your personal laptop.

The Omoji feature of the OPPO phones is one of the best personalization aspects offered by the company. You can create personalized Omojis and use them on multiple platforms.

OPPO Reno8 – a fabulous Phone

After using the smartphone for a while, the first thought that crossed our mind was how a mid-ranger could be this perfect! Whether it is the camera, design, performance, display, or charging tech, OPPO Reno8 proves its mantle in all the mentioned criteria.
