TL; DR
  • ChatGPT now supports direct conversations with third-party apps for tasks like playlist creation or real estate browsing.
  • Early integrations include Spotify, Canva, Zillow, Booking.com, and more; Uber and OpenTable will join later this year.
  • Developers can build custom apps using the new open-source Apps SDK, hinting at an upcoming in-chat app marketplace.

OpenAI has announced a major update to ChatGPT, allowing users to interact directly with integrated apps through natural language commands. Revealed at DevDay 2025, this upgrade transforms ChatGPT into a central hub for real-world tasks, from asking Spotify to create playlists to generating designs in Canva or searching homes via Zillow, all within a single chat.

The new system blends AI conversation with app functionality. Users can call apps directly or let ChatGPT suggest them contextually, for example, invoking Zillow during a discussion about moving. Privacy remains a focus, as each app connection prompts approval detailing shared data and permissions.

For developers, the new open-source Apps SDK offers tools to build conversational apps that integrate seamlessly with ChatGPT. This SDK, built on the Model Context Protocol, supports testing, review, and future monetization options, paving the way for a full-fledged app marketplace.

The feature is already available to users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans (except in the EU for now), with more partners like Uber, Peloton, and AllTrails expected soon. ChatGPT is transitioning from just a chat assistant to a platform for interactive, in-app experiences. What are your thoughts on this feature? Let us know in the comments.
