OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become a very commonly used chatbot nowadays. People across various age groups and professions use ChatGPT for a variety of purposes. This increased usage of ChatGPT among school and college students gave rise to problems like forgery and cheating. Reportedly ChatGPT is being used by students to write essays, letters, and research papers.

Now it seems the seriousness of the problem has finally reached the ears of OpenAI. According to an article by the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is working on a tool that will help teachers and checkers identify students who have cheated in exams. The tool will identify articles, paragraphs, letters, and speeches written using AI. The tool hasn’t been announced yet but it has been under discussion for a long time and might see a rollout this year.

When OpenAI was asked about this tool, they responded by explaining what it is and how it will work.

Tool Against Cheating by OpenAI

OpenAI claims that it is exploring the text watermarking technique to look for data or text based on its origin. It will be effective against localized tampering like paraphrasing. However, it won’t work against complex techniques like using generative AI to reword an article or essay.

OpenAI is exploring how metadata can be used to identify text written by AI or trace its origin. For example, unlike watermarking, metadata will be cryptographically signed, which means there will be no false positives. This tool is still in the early stages of development and the company hopes to make it much better by the time it is released.

If and whenever these tools go official, it will be interesting to see whether they will be able to catch students who have cheated in exams at school and college levels.
