[Update] TRAI announces new tariff framework for broadcasters and operators; lowers the cap on the MRP of individual channels
In February 2019, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) implemented its order for new tariffs for the broadcasting and cable services sector. The regulator has now made fresh amendments that will come in effect from March 1, 2020.
Here are the major takeaways from the new amendments:
- Broadcasters will have to provide all free-to-air channels at Rs. 160.
- A person with Muti-TV connection in a single home will be charged 40 percent of announced Network Capacity Fee (NCF) for every additional connection.
- Channels with a maximum MRP of Rs 12 will only be allowed to feature in broadcasters’ curated packs.
- Any bouquet pack can not cost more than 1.5 times the sum of its individual channel’s a-la-carte price.
- 25 free channels operated by Prasar Bharti have been made mandatory and will be separate of the base 200 channels package.
As per TRAI, all parties will have to post tariff information till January 15. Operators are asked to make the necessary adjustments in packs and channel rate and publish it by January 30.

Telecom and Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) latest controversial enforcement relating to the framework of television channels is making people restless and everyone’s trying to decipher what this new implementation is all about. (हिंदी में पढ़िए)
Apparently, according to TRAI, this new regulation should curb the delivery of surplus channels to your household which holds no importance to you thereby reducing your total monthly tariffs.
After answering all the questions, you will get a list of channels according to your style. You will be able to get information about your monthly rental plan by choosing the channel of your choice. On the channel selector application page on the left side, you will see several options like Price, HD / SD, Genre, Broadcaster and Language. You can set the filter according to your needs.

If you haven’t yet picked your channel pack preference to the operator, then you might find the ‘Best Fit Plan’ activated on your account. Fret not, you still have the option to change or modify the ‘Best Fit Plans’ as well by logging in to your account. Or else, contact your respective DTH operator for the necessary help in this regard.

How will the regulations affect the pricing of TV subscriptions?
But according to the research we have done on the updated pricing and channel package framework, we don’t see prices going down steeply (or at all). Users are required to pay a minimum subscription of 130 + taxes for availing 100 free to air channels and it is only after that they get to add on their favorite channels.
Most of the highly watched entertainment channels fall under the paid category, hence you are supposed to opt for additional packs to get these channels. And because of the fragmented framework being enforced, each television network has launched their own bouquet packs which in turn means that you need to subscribe to each network separately, resulting in a soaring rise in the monthly prices if you need all popular channels.
While we hope the situation gets better and the network operators cut down the current prices, let us take a look at the situation currently existing and what are the tariffs which each network operator has announced till now. These packs mentioned below are curated for the Hindi speaking audience.

Update: Airtel has again introduced its annual plan or pack. In these new plans, the user can get 365 days validity on payment of only 10 months according to his existing plan.
If you are feeling confused about the prices of DTH channels, then you can use TRAI’s recently launched new web application. Here you will see the MRP of the channel you have selected. This application will ask you some questions and then show you the list related to the channel of your choice.

The Trai new regulation also gives you the power to completely customize your package and pay-per channel instead of these bundle packs. Govt is just making fools of public to give choice to see channels but actually they are not giving and charging more. In basic pack more then 50% channels are no use for you.

I wants to choose some selected channels and ready to pay for that only selected channels. we are suffering on account of payment mode by subscribing one channel .we are forced to use all channel under that subscription. I have no need of Bangla Tamil Telugu and various other other channels that we are unaware about that language. I don’t want to take all channels under Sony I don’t want to take all channels under colours or zee group.
TV channel INDUSTRY, is of 2 LAKH crores. 80 crores of people watch TV channel. That is about 20 crore of families watch daily TV CHANNELS.
For every hour their is 26 minutes of advertisement,. just imagine how much money they might be getting. 90% of FAMILIES income per month is below 8000 thousand rupees. Today TV entertaiment is nesessity.
I dont understand, what TRAI GOT. Due to SET TOP BOX, every family who has tv, is now REGISTERED. now govt is getting 100% taxes. TV industry has doubled their charges. it is very difficult for common man to select BOUQUET LIST of BROAD CASTERS., which looks cheap.May GOD give good BUDHEE,(brain) to TRAI.

Can pay the Middle class family 350 or 400Rs par month cable TV operators.salry 10000To12000 par month.school fess, tuition fee, electricity bill, room rent, ghar ka kharcha, travel kharcha.tv only see 2-4 hours daily pay 400 month.i am not satisfied government process set top box.
Trai was made to reduce the tariffs taken by the service providers, but instead it made the customer to pay more than earlier he was paying. Totally rubbish rules, baseless and inappropriate. Harassment on another level, its like doing pick pocket in name of service. Its was firstly 100, then 150, then 200, then 250.. And finally with the grace of TRAI its gone more than 320.. What kind of favouring is that.. Please don’t waste the public wealth to stupid infrastructures and statues, when you have slums near by crawling in the nights.. Do the needful first then think of the sparking. Wake up government.🙏🏻
Common man that after entry of trai we will get cheapest. But it was a JUMLA as we have to pay double the charges what we were paying earlier.

I have chosen a few channels up to Rs. 230 or so but channels operator demanding Rs. 400 on refusal he has disconnect since a week. I had purchased set up box from them hence I am in a fix. I have sent complaints to TRAI and Collector but no response till today.

Why we should pay ncf to DTH ,since we purchased the equipment.i want only pay channel, and I pay for that.

Sir, I simply don’t know the operator of the C-band signal we receive here. It is so stable rainfall or bad weather does not disturb it like signal from small ku dishes.

In the market, there is one dish which is called air free dish. This is purchased one time and then there is no levy on this either monthly or yearly. you can enjoy about 130 channels without any other expense. Now I have heard that TRAI is thinking to impose Rs, 130+ GST +Rs153. is this news correct? Does anybody know?
I am an Air DTH consumer under ID no.3002245469. I had selected the channels and had a talk with the operator on 121 no. but lat4eron i find that on the 2nd connection certain channels have been deleted and on my repeated calls I asked them to uptodate the same but of no avail. Now I am trying to talk to them for the last 30 hours but they are not avalable under the pretex that all the lines are busy. Kindly help me out as I being an old man of 71 years am unable to pass my time by watching my selected channels which are not being made available or I should choose some other DTH company. Kindly look into this complaint and directed the company to do the needful by calling me on my registered no. with regards-rk
Cable operation is running since 30 years till date TRAI had no eye to see this and we were enjoying channels directly i.e. with out set top box. After that TRAI introduced set top bos for Government’s sake that no cable operator can hide subscribers and the cost of Rs 1300/- as price of set top box through on our head!!! only (God can save we people from robbery of Indian Government)very soon why TRAI has shown its low mentality and introduced this packages? The nos. of channels we were enjoying in some Rs 250 has been raised to rs 500/- I think TRAI is mixed with channels and cable operators.
All MRP are per Month or some are per day??? one can not know. It must be cleared.

LOOT MACHA KE RAKHI HAI.Sare main channels ka rate Rs 22 hai.Advt me itna kama raha hai fir bhi itne high rates kyu rakhe hai.Advt ka rate per second ke hisab se vasool karte hai. 30 Min ke programme me minimum 8 se 10 min tak ki add aati hai.Prime time pe advt ke rates high hote hai.India me 10 crore logo ke pass bhi tv hoga to in logo ki monthly kamai socho kitni hogi.advt se kamai alag.
Chuhiya banare ye log ek chanel 22rs. 2 chanel 30rs. Or 12 chanel 31rs. election aane do dekha denge. Same channel ko 200 per month tha.Or same channel ko 350 MC sale.
we are not satisfied with your new plans…… This is like you people are forcing us to take this new pack…… In 1 TV we cant watch all channel at one time everyone having their own choice to select channel bcoz we are already paying you for this…… Mostly people are going on job they come at night and watch TV hardly 2 to 3 hours and to watch little time we have to pay 400/- per month…..not require.

My TV is closed since three months I have restricted my entertainment to some minimum programs and those I see on my PC either on you tube, voot or channel itself. There is one difficulty that the serial I may see on next day i.e. after it has been posted on channel.

दोस्तो आप सब लोक चॅनेल कि कॉस्ट पुच राहे हो लेकिंग यह सोचो कि हम चॅनेल देखने के लीये पैसे क्यू दे जब कि चॅनेल आलो को करोडो रुपये जाहिरात मे मिळते है और वह जाहिरात हम अपनी बिजली जलाके जो कि हमे पैसे दे कर मिलती है आज ३० मिनिट कि सीरिअल मे १६ मिनिट जाहिरात (advertisement ) दिखाई जाती है चलो मन लेते है कि हमे खुजली है पर सेट टॉप बॉक्स आने से पहिले २५०/- मे हमे सब ३०० से ४०० चॅनेल देखणे को मिळते थे। लेकिन कूच चॅनेल वालोणे १०-२० रुपये चार्ज लागया फिर Trai ने उंगली कि और सोचा कि जनता को लुटते है वहापे सेट टॉप बॉक्स लेके आई वहापे १२०० से लेके २००० तक खर्च कराये और चॅनेल कम कर दिये और अभी ये नया नाटक जो सब चॅनेल ३०० से ३५० मे देखणे को मिळते थे अभी २५ से १०० चॅनेल देखणे के लिये ५०० से ७०० देणे पडेगा यह सब ट्राय का नाटक है अभि अभि मोबाइल को रिचार्जे का खर्च नियमित हर महिने कर दिया अभी यह मै तो बोलता हू १ महिने के लिये TV चॅनेल पॅक मत कराओ और १ हप्ता मोबाइल USE मत करो तो यह चॅनेल और मोबाइल कंपनी आपके घर पे आके आपको फ्री सर्व्हिस देंगे
