MediaTek has announced a new Application processor, Helio P60, at MWC 2018. The new chip is meant for mid-range phones and as you’d expect from any freshly baked SoC, there is a dedicated core (NeuroPilot core) to power AI related tasks.

Helio P60 Features

The Helio P60 is an octa-core platform formed on TSMC’s 12nm process. This should help conserve significant power.

There are 4x Cortex-A73 cores in the performance cluster and 4X Cortex-A53 cores in the power cluster. All 8 cores are ticking at 2.0GHz. MediaTek claims 70% boost in performance compared to the last generation Helio P30.

While this does look like a massive performance upgrade, MediaTek Chip will face stiff competition from Qualcomm, who is striving to push custom Kyro and Cortex-A55 cores in the mid-range chips this year.

The Helio P60 employs Mali G72 MP3 GPU which (MediaTek claims) is 70 percent faster than last generation graphics unit.

NeuroPilot will channel AI tasks through the standard Android Neural Networks API. The P60 has three ISPs to handle dual cameras more power-efficiently.

The chipset supports 1080p displays with up to 20:9 aspect ratio. There is support for UFS storage even though OEMs aren’t likely to implement it. The SoC can support up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM(1800MHz), and the LTE Modem supports Cat. 7 Downlink and Cat.13 upload speeds.

Helio P60 Highlights

  • The chipset is formed on 12nm FinFET process
  • 2.0GHz 4x Cortex-A73 cores + 2.0GHz 4x Cortex-A53 cores
  • NeuroPilot core for AI tasks
  • Supports up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM
  • Supports up to 20:9 Full HD displays
  • Mali G73 MP3 GPU (70-percent faster compared to the last generation)
  • 3 ISP for efficiently handling dual Cameras
  • Dual SIM support
  • LTE Modem supports Cat. 7 Downlink and Cat.13 upload speeds.
