Microsoft Pluton Security Processor for Windows PCs announced

0

Microsoft is expanding the Pluton security to Windows machines beyond Xbox and Azure Sphere. It is partnering with leading silicon vendors like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm for this roll-out.

But, what is Pluton? Let’s find out.

Microsoft Pluton Processor features

Pluton is a security processor that debuted inside Xbox One in 2013. And as aforementioned, it has been the Root of Trust subsystem behind Azure Sphere. It guards the chip to cloud environment against:

• physical attacks
• prevent the theft of credential and encryption keys
• provide the ability to recover from software bugs

Going ahead, it will be the security module built right into the Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm CPUs within Windows PCs. So, it will be part of Snapdragon 8cx or Microsoft’s own SQ1/ SQ2 chipsets. Not just laptops but this could make its way into custom PC builds and perhaps even Linux computers.

Sensitive credentials, user identities, encryption keys, and personal data will stay isolated from the rest of the system, even Pluton firmware.

”None of this information can be removed from Pluton even if an attacker has installed malware or has complete physical possession of the PC,” says Microsoft in its official blog post.

Pluton will be a more advanced solution than the prevailing Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology. That said, Windows PCs with Pluton processor will be initially emulating and employing the existing TPM specifications and APIs. So, you will still enjoy enhanced security features like BitLocker and System Guard.

Further, thanks to an end-to-end control, Pluton will ensure quick firmware updates across the board and will benefit the entire Windows PC ecosystem.

At the moment, Microsoft hasn’t revealed the release date and other details. But, the OEM partners have all committed to future releases.
