Software giant Microsoft is heading to a new engineering schedule for its major software product Windows OS. According to a Windows Central report, Microsoft is moving towards a three-year release cycle after which it will be releasing major versions.

Microsoft could launch a new major Windows version in 2024

According to the reports, Microsoft is expected to ship a new and major Windows version every three years. With that being said, Windows 11 was shipped in 2021 which means there’s another update slated to arrive sometime in 2024. At this moment, it isn’t clear whether Microsoft is talking about a new major update based on Windows 11 or the next-gen Windows 12.

Additionally, the 2023 client release for Windows update codenamed Sun Valley 3 is no more onboard. With the latest information in mind, Microsoft is willing to ship more features with its upcoming Windows version.

With Windows 11 version 22H2 codenamed Sun Valley 2, Microsoft kicked off the “Moments” feature which effectively gives the software giant opportunity to roll out new features throughout the year and outside the major OS release such as Fall 2023 that were expected to get. Microsoft has plans to release new features as a part of the in-market Windows version up to four times a year starting in 2023.

A similar update procedure was followed by Microsoft during the Taskbar weather button rollout in Windows 11. The update was sent via Moments where Microsoft released a handful of new features to other users after it underwent testing with Insiders units.

Talking about the 2024 release, we aren’t aware of many details about the same. The engineering team at Microsoft is still in early planning and engineering state which means there’s still a lot to plan and discuss before even the prototype of the upcoming Windows OS update is released. As of now, we have heard that the upcoming project is codenamed “Next Valley” which doesn’t give out much information about the upcoming update as well.
