Lenovo K8 Note Look and Feel

Question: How is the Lenovo K8 Note design?

Answer: As far as design goes, Lenovo plays it safe with a tried and trusted template. K8 Note has a metal back that gently curves towards the edges, metallic sides with single chamfered edge, and a 2.5D Gorilla Glass with smudge resistant oleophobic coating on the front.

It’s a tall phone with beefy bezels on top and bottom, but it’s also reasonably slim that makes it quite comfortable to wield, in spite of the decent heft ( 180 grams) that it has. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the rear, right below the dual camera capsule, and the capacitive navigation bar is present below the display.

Another interesting aspect is the dedicated music key on the right. You can double tap the key for Play/Pause and also use it to the switch tracks. Or you can customize the double tap action to launch any app, fire camera flash, etc.

Question: How is the Lenovo K8 Note build quality?

Answer: The Lenovo K8 Note feels solid and durable. There are no flexes or creeks in the body.

Question: Does Lenovo K8 Note have capacitive navigation buttons below the display?

Answer: Yes, navigation buttons are present below the display. They are not backlit but are silver coated.

Question: How is the Lenovo K8 Note display?

Answer: Lenovo is using a 5.5-inch Full HD display panel on the K8 Note. From the display settings, you can switch between vibrant and standard color profile (just like Moto phones). Whites on the display lean towards blue, which is what most consumers must be used to by now. The display brightness, dynamic range, contrast, and colors are good for the price.

Bluelight filter isn’t present on the phone by default.

Question: Does Lenovo K8 Note have sRGB color Mode? How to enable it?

Answer – Yes, the option to switch to the sRGB color mode is present under developer options, but you can’t enable it. If you toggle it on, it gets turned off as soon as you leave developer options.

Question: Does the Lenovo K8 Note have the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: The phone has adaptive brightness. We didn’t face any issues with visibility under direct sunlight.

Question: Does the Lenovo K8 Note display have Gorilla glass protection?

Answer: Yes, the phone has Gorilla Glass 3 layer on the display.

Answer: At the time of first boot, about 2.5GB free RAM was available (out of 4GB). We didn’t face any issue with RAM management.

Answer: Yes, the Lenovo K8 Note comes with dedicated microSD card slot which can be used to add up to 256GB of secondary storage.

Answer: We didn’t face any issue with day-to-day usage. UI transitions are fast, the phone can easily keep 5 to 6 apps cached in RAM, and software decoding while playing videos works without any hint of lag. Even high-end games like Asphalt 8 that we have tried so far work well.

Question: Does Lenovo K8 Note have heating issues?

  • Update (May 11, 2018): Several users are reporting performance and software issue with K8 Note after the Oreo update. That’s something you should keep in mind if you are buying the phone as of today.

Camera

Question: How is the Lenovo K8 Note camera quality?

Answer: The 13MP camera on the Lenovo K8 Note can shoot great details in outdoor lighting. The color contrast and dynamic range are fine too. For indoor shots and in low light, the images aren’t very sharp and noise creeps in.

Overall, the camera performance is better than what we usually see in this budget. We would rank the rear camera performance as better than Redmi Note 4 and somewhat below the likes of Cool 1 dual.

Question: How does the dual camera on the Lenovo K8 Note work?

Answer: The second camera on the K8 Note is used for depth sensing. You can switch to dual camera mode from the icon on the top left corner in the camera view finder. Once you select the ‘Depth enabled’ mode, you will notice a slider on the left that can be used to adjust the intensity of the background blur in your portrait shots.

It performance in portrait mode wasn’t perfect and we hope this is somthing lenovo will improve over the next few weeks with software update. We have already received first camera improvement update on our review unit.

Question: How is the selfie camera on Lenovo K8 Note?

Answer: The 13MP camera selfie camera on the K8 note again performs well outdoors. In doors, performance is nothing to write home about. A manual mode is present and you can use it to enhance your low light selfies to an extent.

Question: Can the Lenovo K8 Note shoot 4K videos?

Answer: No, you can shoot up to 1080p full HD videos.

Question: Can you record slow-motion videos on Lenovo K8 Note?

Answer: No, you cannot.

Software

Question: How is the software on the Lenovo K8 Note?

Answer: Stock Android Nougat software is one of K8 Note’s biggest selling point. For the K8 Note, Lenovo has picked the exact same software as that of Moto phones including the Moto Launcher, icons, etc. The unadulterated Android has its advantages for it is light and resource-friendly, but if you are used to a robust feature rich interface, it might feel a bit uninspiring too.

We, however, like stock Android simplicity and would take it over gaudy half baked custom ROMs that are fairly common on budget phones. In our opinion, it’s a safe bet from the consumer point of view. Besides, you can add third party apps for added functionality.

Lenovo K8 Note Quick Review – Should you buy it?

The Lenovo K8 Note borrows a lot from whatever works for Moto phones (Software, splash resistance, etc.) while retaining K-series multi media friendly approach. No phone in this budget is perfect and the K8 Note has its flaws too but it still feels like something we could recommend to anyone restricted by a budget of 15,000 INR. Especially anyone who is looking for Redmi phone alternatives.

  1. I bought Lenovo K8 note on June 2018. From first day it has network issue like Jio SIM signal fluctuate rapidly and sometimes it dropped to zero. It is making call quality very poor. Also, bluetooth connection breaks rapidly while listening music.
I have submitted my mobile at service centre, however even after changing the motherboard and RF cable, issue did not resolve. Mobile is still at service centre. What should I do?

  2. Hi Deepak,

Hope you are doing good. Till now you would have already figured out the issues with K8 Note after Oreo update.
To name a few….unbearable heating and battery drain in couple of hours. Also no acknowledgement from Lenovo of the issue and asking users to visit service center.
Though that doesn’t solve the issue.

Since you have written a detailed review of the phone I would say you should update the review with these issues, so that at least future buyers won’t be duped.

    Thanks,
    Anup

    • Thanks for your feedback Anup. We haven’t tested the phone after oreo update, but yes we are getting quite a few complaints. I have added an update note to the performance section of this article.

  3. Guys, I am having this phone since JAN 2018, I am having heating issue with this lenovo k8 note handset, sometimes it get so hot, it feels like it is going to blast very soon that too while checking my emails, As I am media professionals, thought to circulate this problem of K8 note heating on all online media, so that others can be safeguarded for not buying this problematic k8 note series phones.

      • I did the factory reset but still the same and now the Wifi/Bluetooth is also not working and message pop-up’s are there that Bluetooth/play services are not responding. Any other way I can solve it.

          • Thanks a lot for quick reply.

On Lenovo website the remaining warranty days showing as ending on 07-12-2018, whereas I purchased this set on 09.01.2018, so is there a possibility that retailer/seller sold me a defective or used set instead of new one, as since using this set it’s getting heated up like anything and I have to shut it down. The problem is not normal heating but intense heating without any use even without the SIM card and Wifi/Bluetooth also stopped working.

            Appreciate the comment.

  4. Dear Deepak, My K8 Note heats up after 15-20 min of continuous use (video, games, etc)

  5. Cast Screen in the Display option is not working! It is not showing any nearby devices to connect! But it is working properly in lower versions of Lenovo Note phones!

  6. Hi All,

I am using Lenovo K4 and I am using two LTE sims. K4 is not supporting both LTE at a time. It is supporting single LTE sim and other SiM is in active. TO make other LTE sim active, I need to switch the data connection to other sim.
Does this problem fixed in K8. This is the only Reason I am looking to buy a new phone. Please suggest me which phone will support bot LTE sims

  7. I got Lenovo K8 plus tdy. I have PBM to connecting with my headphone (JBL). Which supports for my K5 Note. Why? In K8 plus not at all supporring.
And, About the speaker only right side is working. Left side not working. Why ?

    Thanks in advance

  8. Does this phone support video calls (inbuilt) through Jio ( without using any app ) like in mi phones…coz I had lenovo k4 note in which video calling options were unavailable… Expecting an honest reply…thank you!!

  9. i was using lenovo note 4 and was satisfied with it only grey area being camera not very good .Is lenovo k 8 note is good option for me in the given price range.when compared with predecessor

  10. I am having issues in Lenovo k8 note…not able to connect to internet from yesterday the airtel provider told there is no problem from there end…is there any way to solve it………..

  11. My Loptop is not detecting the Lonovo K8 Note wi-fi Hotspot. Also there are no dailer options like call recording etc. I tried many 3rd party call recorders , but none of the app supporting it. Plz reply. Thanks

  12. Cast screen not working always shows no nearby devices found tried to connect to my Samsung led my older k4 note connects perfectly. K8 note has some problem it does on even show on / off option in cast screen.

  13. I bought this phone and I am very disappointed
1>No call recording facility and third part apps wont work properly even after Battery saver is off so this is a big let down also
2.Mute button on phone is not having Red light to indicate same its difficult to know if phone is on mute or not….
3.touch screen is not as sensitive my Mi prime had much better feel I think.

  14. I got my Lenovo K8 Note today. I have some questions. I notice there are two sound outlets in the bottom, but the sound only comes through the one on the right. Is it supposed to be that way or is something wrong with my device? No sound at all from the left outlet.

My device takes around 100-120 minutes to charge completely. Is it normal? Isn’t it supposed to charge fast?

Double tap to wake works sometimes. Not always. Is it a software problem?

    • Most phones (almost all) have audio coming from one grill only (mono speaker) so that’s normal. 100 to 120 minutes charging time is also normal. Double tap to not working always could be a bug.

  15. I have bought Lenovo K8 Note but I see for camera right side blank space is wasted where flip/video option were displayed that could be used where as in my samsung e7 full area is covered for clicking a pic. Lenovo not offering their own music & video player. I’m not able to sign in for lenovo account & office apps don’t know reason. Overall Mobile quality is good with it’s price. Can you please advice.

  16. Dear Deepak,

Does Lenovo K8 note support screen mirroring onto the smart TV…without any extra hardware[e.g. Wifi modem or internet connection] bridging them.
Does it have automatic call recording function built into the phone?
Does it have FM LIVE CONTENT RECORDING FACILIITY?
Does it have remote control option for TVs etc?

Please suggest a phone which may have all these in addition to 4 gb +64gb+4000mah battery,2+1 card tray and Nougat manufaturer installed volte phone.
    Thanks a lot

    • You can use guest mode (scroll down to quick settings>> guest mode on top) to add apps and run them with a separate account. The second storage option isn’t there by default. You can also use third party apps to accomplish that.

  17. Believe me I have used Lenovo phones and Tabs. And also Mi phones. Nothing like Mi phones.Good battery life, sturdy, no heating good instrument life. Lenovo only announce good features to beat the competition but are really crap, will not last long. Lenovo instruments heat like anything and start showingup problems like, low battery life and touch and display problems and hanging and display going blank. I will never buy a Lenovo any more. Last phone was Lenovo K5Note.

  18. Does lenovo k8 note supports dual whatssapp account function like mi max 2? Does it have inbuilt reading mode that filters blue light and helps eyes to make comfortable while reading long hours? please reply..

    • No. the software doesn’t have those feature inbuilt but you can still access them.
To get reading mode on any phone – You can go to developer options (to enable then tap on build number in about phone 7 times)>> Simulate Color Space>> Monochromancy
For multiple App accounts on any phone – You can use guest mode and create separate profile where you can download apps and sign in with a different account.

You can also use third party apps to access these features.

      • Performance shouldn’t be a problem on the phone, but yes, Snapdragon 653 is faster. We haven’t reviewed Mi Max 2, so it’s hard to compare. Besides Mi Max 2 has a very large display (6.44-inch vs 5.5-inch) so it lies in a different league. A more comparable option will be Mi 5X that shall arrive next month. Camera quality is average (nothing great, not bad either), dual camera needs more work, though.
