Apple iPhones contract manufacturer Wistron is gearing up for iPhone 12 production. Some of it could very well happen in India. Wistron, one of the two Taiwanese contract iPhone manufacturers, has started hiring and it also aims to infuse 2,900 crores in India to boost its iPhone local production capabilities. The company is hoping to produce iPhone 12 components locally here in the country. The Made in India iPhone 12 is likely to hit stores sometime in the middle of 2021, a report by Business Standard claims.

Wistron’s production facility in Kolar district in Karnataka is likely to play a major role in the iPhone 12 local production goal. Various reports have highlighted Wistron’s plans to manufacture units in Narasapura plant likely are for assembling iPhone’s Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).

The PCB board is one of the most important components of a smartphone. Just like the motherboards in PCs, it is a bed to fit processors, memory, and modems, and delicate circuits, etc. and thus constitutes a major chunk of a smartphone’s cost.

If Apple finally decides to give Wistron a go-ahead for the made-in-India iPhone 12, it will help the company save 22 percent of import taxes and take advantage of the Production Linked Incentive scheme (PLI) that was announced recently by the Government of India to give a boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

Apple started assembling of iPhone 11 in India in partnership with Foxconn earlier this year. With its plans to move iPhone 12 and iPhone SE 2020 partially to countries like India, it plans to cut its dependence on China which will still be making the most iPhones in the world.
