How Toyota’s Hybrid and JV Play are Quietly Making it a Top Performer

Toyota is a brand that many people think is not very significant or consequential in the Indian market. While the perception is that Toyota doesn’t sell many cars, the Japanese giant is slowly making its mark as the leader in the hybrids game. Toyota has one of the highest number of hybrid cars in the market.

From the Toyota Vellfire, to the Toyota Camry, to the Innova Hycross, to the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota has a hybrid powertrain for everyone. With a hybrid in pretty much all segments, even counting the Toyota Taisor with the mild hybrid which is the Toyota version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

With the August 2025 sales data of cars in India, Toyota’s presence is quite evident. Holding the 5th spot in terms of the volume of units sold in August, Toyota secured an almost 9 percent market share last month (8.94 percent). Now that is above the likes of Kia, MG, Honda, Skoda, and other brands that seem to be more popular.

While the reason for Toyota’s impressive performance can’t be pinpointed to one thing, there are two major reasons – number one being that Toyota is the only brand which is offering a hybrid powertrain in a number of segments – ranging from 10 lakh rupees, going up to 1 crore rupees or more for the Toyota Vellfire.

Apart from that, the joint venture with Maruti Suzuki has also given Toyota some ground to stand on in the mainstream segment. Before the joint venture, Toyota had only the Innova and the Fortuner that were a bit of mainstream cars. Before this, Toyota’s venture into the Indian market has been met with a bit of a mixed reaction – the earlier cars like the Toyota Qualis or the Etios were great hits in our market, but it was short-lived. Then came cars like the Toyota Yaris and RAV4, which failed to capture the market.

However, the strategy to join hands with Maruti Suzuki has been a super hit for Toyota. Not only has it given access to a whole new line of popular products like the Glanza, the Rumoin (Ertiga), and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, it has also brought a lot of attention towards Toyota.

Coming to the hybrid powertrains, no other brand in the country is offering as many options in the fully hybrid powertrains. In total, Toyota is offering four strong hybrid cars – the Vellfire, Camry, Toyota Innova Hycross, and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. This gives Toyota one of the biggest edge in the market, especially around people’s hesitation towards buying electric cars and the lack of trust in the infrastructure or range anxiety.

Hybrids offer a convenient alternative since these cars run on EV-only mode on lower speeds, and the petrol engine kicks in after a certain speed, which effectively saves a lot of fuel. For example, Toyota’s Camry, which is a more than ₹60 lakh car gives a mileage of more than 25 kmpl, thanks to a fully electric mode below the speeds of 40kmph.

Holding 5th place in the sales list for August 2025 only tells us that Toyota’s strategy of partnering with Maruti Suzuki and offering the most amount of hybrids in the market has worked really well and the brand has been able to capture a 9 percent market share. Impressive.
