At its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024, Google made a splash by introducing Veo, its most advanced video generation model yet. Veo promises to revolutionize video creation by generating high-definition videos in various cinematic and visual styles.
This unveiling comes amid stiff competition in the AI video generation, with rivals like OpenAI‘s Sora and Meta’s Emu Video gaining traction. Sora, in particular, has impressed users with its realistic visuals since its debut in February.
Veo can produce high-quality 1080p resolution videos that exceed a minute in length. It leverages an advanced understanding of natural language and visual semantics to replicate the user’s creative vision closely. The model can accurately render details in longer prompts and capture the intended tone, even comprehending cinematic terms like “timelapse” or “aerial shots of a landscape.” Moreover, it ensures consistency and coherence throughout shots, with realistic movements of people, animals, and objects.

“We are also exploring features like storyboarding and generating longer scenes,” said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind.
Veo builds upon Google’s extensive experience in generative video models, incorporating learnings from previous projects like Generative Query Network (GQN), DVD-GAN, and Imagen-Video. Google is inviting filmmakers and creators to experiment with Veo to further refine its capabilities and ensure that creators have a voice in its development.

“With Veo, we’ve improved techniques for how the model learns to understand what’s in a video, renders high-definition images, simulates the physics of our world, and more,” said Eli Collins, Vice President of Product Management, and Doug Eck, Senior Research Director, at Google.
