For a long time, Google Pixel users have complained about slow fingerprint scanners. The first Google smartphone to feature an under-display fingerprint reader was the Pixel 6. While the optical scanner on the smartphone (and newer Pixel phones) does well most of the time, users often face some issues related to unlocking speeds. Further, reliability problems have also been a concern.

Pixel Users Have Complained About Facing Fingerprint Scanner-Related Issues
Even though Google has tried to fix the problems through software updates, they still persist in a less troublesome state. However, that could change with the upcoming Pixel 9 series. Until now, Pixel phones have relied on an optical fingerprint reader from a Chinese company named Goodix. Several other companies, like OnePlus and Redmi, have also sourced their optical fingerprint scanners from the company. However, the problem isn’t with the manufacturer as much as it is with the product.
Optical Vs. Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor
You see, optical under-display fingerprint scanners are much slower than ultrasonic scanners. Further, optical readers are more sensitive to dirt and moisture, which is also why they are less accurate or reliable. Last but not least, such sensors scan your fingerprints by shining a very bright light, which might be uncomfortable for users in several scenarios, especially if they’re using their phone in a poorly lit environment.

Pixel 9 Series To Upgrade To Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors
These problems aren’t limited to the Pixel series; other models that use optical scanners also face similar, if not all, issues. However, according to a report by Android Authority, the Pixel 9 series will feature Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic sensor, addressing the problem once and for all. For those catching up, this is the same sensor the Galaxy S24 Ultra (review) uses, and so far, we haven’t heard any complaints about it.
The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner should arrive on the regular Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, and the purported Pixel Pro 9 XL. However, there’s no information on whether the Pixel 9a will feature an optical or an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.
