TL; DR
- A CMF Phone 1 exploded in Maharashtra while the owner was riding his bike, leading to one fatality and leaving another person severely injured.
- Early reports suggest a possible battery malfunction as the cause.
- The smartphone maker, CMF (a sub-brand of Nothing), has yet to issue an official statement on the same.
Reports of smartphones exploding have been on the rise recently, with earlier incidents involving Xiaomi and OnePlus creating widespread concern among users. Now, the CMF Phone 1 (by Nothing) has joined this list with a tragic incident in Maharashtra, where a phone explosion led to one fatality and left another person injured.
CMF Phone 1 Reportedly Explodes
The news was first reported by the ABP Majha channel, which confirmed that the device involved was a CMF Phone 1, purchased just a month ago. The incident occurred while the phone’s owner was traveling from Kolhapur to Sangli on a bike with a companion. Shockingly, the phone exploded while the bike was in motion.
The explosion claimed the life of the phone’s owner, while his companion sustained severe injuries. Early reports suggest that the explosion might have been caused by a battery malfunction. Since the news broke, it has recently gone viral on platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

CMF and Nothing Yet to Issue an Official Statement
CMF, a sub-brand of Nothing, has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The CMF Phone 1, touted as “Made in India,” made headlines earlier for selling over 100,000 units within three hours of launch.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, but overheating or a defective battery could be potential reasons. If you have the CMF Phone 1, I’d suggest avoiding phone usage if it overheats and checking the battery if the phone appears swollen.
The phone is modular, so make sure you don’t puncture the battery when replacing its back covers, when you are doing so. Anyway, I too have a CMF Phone 1 in my drawer and I’ve drained the battery entirely until CMF comes up with an official statement to reassure the users.
