Apple Watch Series 7 renders reveal a stunning squared-off design

The Apple Watch Series 7 may introduce the biggest design change in its six-year history. Apple’s smartwatch hasn’t really undergone a proper redesign yet, aside from a slightly larger display and ever-so-slightly rounded corners introduced with Series 4.

The next model is expected to change that. No, we’re not talking about a completely round Apple Watch Series 7, as that remains as unlikely to happen as ever (unfortunately). The new Apple Watch Series 7 is about to get a squared-off design update that makes it more consistent with the rest of Apple’s current product portfolio, and that – along with one or two minor tweaks – could make it feel fresher than it has been in a long time.

Apple Watch Series 7 Features: What to expect

A trend toward smoother and rounder designs was apparent in the industry. Samsung’s Galaxy flagship series pushed the boundaries of curved screens and sloping surfaces. Au contraire, a couple of years ago, Apple started making its products boxier, with flush sides instead of rounded edges. The decision was no doubt inspired by older generations of iPhones (iPhone 4 and 5 in particular).

The iPad Pro launched with a flat frame that complemented the bigger screen and thinner, uniform bezels. With flat sides, the iPhone 12 series and this year’s Mac Pros have continued this trend. The new Apple Watch Series 7 is likely next in line to get some bulk shaved off its sides.

By flattening the sides of the Apple Watch, it will look more consistent with the other devices in Apple’s lineup and its bezels will appear thinner. The slightly bigger display rumored for the Apple Watch Series 7 could further compound this effect.

The Apple Watch Series 7 could come in two new case sizes – 41mm and 45mm. The watch will replace the current 40mm and 44mm options that we’ve gotten used to since the Apple Watch Series 4. There may not seem to be much of a difference in size (and granted, there isn’t), but it lends credibility to another rumor we’ve been hearing about the Apple Watch Series 7 which is – the inclusion of a larger display.

Apple Watches were available in 38mm and 42mm sizes until the Series 4. Apple bumped up the case size by 2 mm with the launch of Series 4, which brought a larger display. The new increase in case sizes may be partially due to a slightly bigger display (and hopefully a bigger battery as well).

Price and release date

In recent years, Apple Watch models have all started at $399 (for base versions), with the Watch SE being the notable exception at $279, though it was positioned as more of a budget option. Unless Apple really has a surprise in store for us, we’d say that there’s a pretty good chance that the 41mm version of Apple Watch Series 7 will launch for $399, and go up from there for the 45mm version and special editions.

Apple’s annual event is fast approaching, so we should be expecting the Series 7 soon. There is no concrete date for this year’s event, but historically Apple has always held it in early- to mid-September, so we can expect Apple to do the same this year. Based on how events have been scheduled in recent years, the 2021 Apple Special Event is most likely to occur between September 5 and September 20. We expect Apple Watch Series 7 to be announced at that time.
