While it is easy to download apps on an iPhone, it could be tedious to organize them, especially if one doesn’t know all the ways to do it. Hence, in this article, we’ll discuss five ways to organize the app icons on your iPhone’s Home Screen. These ways include rearranging apps/widgets, creating new Home Screen pages, adding/removing apps from the Dock, and using the App Library.

Rearrange Apps And Widgets (Or Remove Them)

Rearrange Apps And Widgets (Or Remove Them)

While there are multiple ways to organize your iPhone’s Home Screen, you should start by rearranging the apps or widgets. Although iOS 18 allows you to place an app anywhere on the screen, iOS 17 and older versions still place the app on the next empty slot.

So, the first thing you should do is move the apps around and consider placing them in a manner that the most used app lies within your thumb’s reach. It could be Gmail, WhatsApp, or any other app you frequent; place it in the bottom right corner. To move the apps around, press and hold on an empty space on the Home Screen, and once the icons start to jiggle, hold onto one to move it and drop wherever desired.

If you wish to declutter the Home Screen, consider removing some apps. It could be the banking app you haven’t used in a while or the stargazing app you downloaded months ago. Simply press and hold on the app icon and select Remove App > Remove from Home Screen. The same goes for widgets; if a widget occupies too much space on the Home Screen, press and hold until it jiggles, and then use the crosshair to adjust the widget’s size (in iOS 18).

Create New Home Screen Pages

Create New Home Screen Pages

If there are too many apps on your Home Screen and you wish to declutter it, consider moving some apps to a new Home Screen page. To make a new page, touch and hold an app until all the icons jiggle, then drag an app to the right edge of the screen. After a second, the new home Home Screen page appears to the right. Now, you can move some apps from the cluttered page to the new one and organize them how you want.

Pro tip: Consider dividing the apps based on usage and placing them on different Home Screen pages. For instance, you can keep all the work-related apps on one page, while others can rest on a separate page. When you have more than one page, a row of dots above the Dock tells you which page you’re on (indicated by a bright dot).

When using multiple Home Screen pages, you can press and hold on to an empty space to enter the editing mode and then press the pill-shaped button above the Dock (with the dots). On the next screen, you’ll see a preview of all the Home Screen Pages on your iPhone.

  • If you wish to reorder the pages, press and hold one and drag it to change its position.
  • However, if you wish to hide a page, tap the tick below the page preview and then hit Done in the top right corner.
  • To remove a page, hit the minus button in the top left corner.

Create Folders On The Home Screen

Create Folders On The Home Screen

Apple’s iOS also allows you to stack multiple apps and keep them in a folder that occupies the same space as one app icon. While folders save space, they let you store and glance through similar spaces on the same screen. For instance, if you have multiple payment apps on your iPhone, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, PayTM, and BHIM, you can put them in one folder and name it “Payments.” Similarly, you can place all the OTT apps in one folder and name it “Entertainment.”

Tap and hold on an empty space on the Home Screen, and once the apps start to jiggle, drag one of the apps you wish to transfer to a folder and drop it over another. This will create a folder with an auto-generated name based on the type of app you’ve selected. You can drag all the apps you wish to store in this folder. Once done, head back to the home screen, press and hold the folder, and select Rename from the menu to set the desired name.

It is important to mention that folder names only appear once you open the folder; they don’t show up on the Home Screen.

Add/Remove Apps From The Dock

Add/Remove Apps From The Dock

Have you noticed the box of apps at the bottom of your iPhone’s Home Screen? No matter which page you’re on, the apps remain the same. The box is called Dock. By default, it houses the Phone app, along with Messages, Safari, and Apple Music. However, you can customize the Dock as per your preference.

Simply tap and hold on an empty space on your Home Screen, and then hit the minus symbol above the app icons in the Dock to remove it. Since the Dock can only hold four app icons at a time, you’d have to remove one to place another. Once you remove an app, press and hold on another app’s icon, drag it from its place, and then drop it in the Dock. You can also place multiple apps in the Dock by creating a folder.

Try Using The App Library

iPhone's App Library

If you don’t want to move around anything, get used to the iPhone’s App Library. You see, iOS arranges all the apps on your iPhone in different folders (based on their purpose) listed in the App Library. If you ever face trouble locating an app, simply head to the App Library (to the right of the Home Screen pages) and type the app’s name in the search box at the top. Further, you can find the apps in the folders or swipe down from the top to view all the apps in an alphabetical list.

Even if you remove an app from a Home Screen page, it will still be available in the App Library unless you uninstall it. You can remove all the less-used apps from your Home Screen and locate them in the App Library whenever you want to use them. Further, you can also conduct a Spotlight search to find it and open it within seconds. Simply swipe down on the Home Screen and type in the name of the app you’re looking for in the search box.
