MediaTek recently announced its flagship mobile processor, the Dimensity 9300 SoC, to take on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Over the next year, consumers will see several top-tier Android phones featuring either of the chips. Unlike every year, the Dimensity 9300 SoC is slightly more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 this year. This is reflected in the performance-to-power consumption ratio shared by a tipster on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Dimensity 9300 SoC Could Be Powerful And Efficient Than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Known tipster Ice Universe has shared an image that showcases the energy efficiency curve-CPU load of four chipsets, including Dimensity 9200+, Dimensity 9300, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It contains a graph with Geekbench 5 multi-core score on the Y-axis and motherboard power consumption (W) on the X-axis.

As seen in the graph, the Dimensity 9300 SoC performs better than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 while consuming the same power. This indicates that MediaTek’s new mobile processor could be more power efficient than Qualcomm’s latest chip. Dimensity 9300 SoC also goes on to consume more power, but it surpasses the peak performance of 8 Gen 3 while doing so.

Here’s How The Graph Reads

Dimensity 9300 SoC vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance-to-power consumption graph via Ice Universe

While consuming slightly over 16W, the Dimensity 9300 SoC scored more than 7,000 points on the Geekbench 5 multi-core performance test. At the same time, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 peaked under 7,000 points on the same test while consuming slightly less than 14W. At about 15W power consumption, the Dimensity 9300 SoC can score higher, indicating that it needs less power to reach higher performance levels.

The graph also shows how this wasn’t the case with the Dimensity 9200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the last-generation mobile processors from the two companies. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was more powerful and efficient than the Dimensity 9200 SoC. Nonetheless, it looks like MediaTek has learned its lesson and is coming up with a more balanced processor this year.

Samsung’s Exynos 2400 SoC Performance Scores Are Disappointing

The tipster mentions that the test was conducted on an engineering mobile phone. Further, he also talks about the Exynos 2400 SoC, which isn’t even close to the MediaTek and Qualcomm chips. A recent Geekbench listing also corroborates this, where the Galaxy S24’s Korean unit, with the Exynos 2400 SoC, could only score 2,051/6,204 points in the single/multi-core performance test.
