Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, recently announced a new selfie-focused budget smartphone in India, Redmi Y1 Lite, at a price of Rs. 6,999. Even when it belongs to Xiaomi’s selfie series, it fulfills its part as an entry grade phone with a 5.5-inch screen (other Xiaomi phones in this class have smaller 5-inch screens).

But if you are looking for something other than a Xiaomi phone instead, the Redmi Y1 Lite lands right into South Korean’s Galaxy On5 Pro’s ballpark, which has been best priced in India at Rs. 6,990. The rivalry is further ignited by the specification – ironically – they both share quite a few similarities. So, which one is is a better option? Let’s discuss.

Design and Display

Well, both smartphones have a very sleek and compact design. But if you ask us to pick our choice, it will be Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite. The phone comes clad in a polycarbonate body with a metal finish, 2.5D Glass up front and curved smooth edges on the sides. Even with a bigger display, the Redmi Y1 Lite weighs almost the same as the Galaxy On5 Pro.

On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro comes in a plastic framing with a faux leather back and metallic finish edges. Here, too, the back of the phone has got nothing but a primary camera. Up front, it has room for 5-inch display, front camera, home button and capacitive buttons. The phone is more compact than the Redmi Y1 Lite, thanks to its roundish curved corners.

At the display front, the Redmi Y1 Lite has a tad bigger display, 5.5-inch to be exact, than the Galaxy On5 Pro’s 5-inch display. Both the display supports 1280X720 pixel resolution, so there isn’t much to judge here. Neither phone supports fingerprint sensor.

If you need a bigger 5.5-inch screen, you should go with the Redmi Y1 Lite, if you are looking for something more compact, the On5 Pro should be more inline with your taste.

Performance and Software

The Redmi Y1 Lite is powered by Snapdragon 425 octa-core SoC and the Galaxy On5 Pro by 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos processor. The difference in the real-time performance of two processors is minuscule. Both the phones should manage your day-to-day usage with ease. However, if you test the processors with heavy-games, they will struggle a little.

The processors on both the phones are backed by 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which you can expand up to 128GB via a dedicated MicroSD card slot. So, basically, both of these phones are meant only for basic users.

The Redmi Y1 comes running on Android Nougat based MIUI 8, out of the box, which will soon be upgraded to company’s latest skin MIUI 9. Xiaomi’s has added some nifty features to its MIUI 9, which means that the your experience with the Redmi Y1 Lite will be more friendly.

In comparison, the Galaxy On5 Pro runs on a pretty outdated version of Android, Android Marshmallow with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface running on top of it. The UI is simple, clean and clutter free.

Camera and Battery

So far so good, but how well is the Camera and battery performance of these phones? Let’s find out:

The cameras on Redmi Y1 Lite is backed by a 13MP rear-sensor with f/2.2 aperture and LED light and a 5MP front sensor with f/2.0 aperture. On the other hand, Galaxy On5 Pro sports 8MP primary camera with LED flash and f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP selfie shooter with f/2.2 aperture.

Although Xiaomi calls its Redmi Y1 Lite a budget selfie smartphone yet its front camera remains nominal to Galaxy On5 Pro. Both the smartphones will give you workable selfies in good lighting conditions.

As for the battery back up, the Galaxy On5 Pro houses 2600mAh non-removable battery, which is considerably smaller than the Redmi Y1 Lite 3080mAh battery. Neither of the two supports fast charging.

Verdict

At the finish line, both Redmi Y1 Lite and Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro stands remarkably close. They both integrate features that make them a decent offering in the respective price tag. So, the question looms:

Who should buy Redmi Y1 Lite?

The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite benefits from bigger battery, slightly better camera performance, and its latest software. The phone is for those who are looking for a sleek smartphone with a bigger 5.5-inch display without spending too much.

Who should buy Galaxy On5 Pro?

Despite the fact that Samsung Galaxy On5 Pro was launched three-months back, it still stands a chance to compete with contemporary budget smartphones. Those who are looking for a compact phone with tier-1 branding can buy the Galaxy On5 Pro for Rs. 6,990.
