Design and Build Quality

The Xiaomi Mi 8 and OnePlus 6 both are quite slim, lightweight, and ergonomically designed phones with full-screen display and glass-sandwiched unibodies. It is difficult to call out one phone premium over the other, but there are few things they do differently.

Xiaomi literally pulled off an iPhone X and named it the Mi 8. The fascia of the phone has a notch, which is as broad as the Apple’s product and for no good reason, and the rear has top-corner aligned dual-camera, placed vertically. The only notable difference you will come across is Mi 8 display sporting a slight amount of bezel at the bottom, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

In comparison, the OnePlus 6 features a smaller notch and retains its individuality. The handset has a center-aligned dual-rear camera and fingerprint sensor (also placed in vertical position). The OnePlus 6 has an alert-slider, which is missing from the Mi 8.

The built quality is almost the same on both phones but the fact that Mi 8 is slightly thinner and lightweight, making it more manageable than the OnePlus 6. We are having a hard time looking past how much the Mi 8 borrows from the iPhone X and thus we are more inclined to side with OnePlus 6 on the design front.

Display

On the display front, both OnePlus 6 and Mi 8 features Samsung’s AMOLED display at respective 6.28-inch and 6.21-inch size. Both panels have Full HD+ (2560X1440p) resolution and support for wide color gamut.

While the OnePlus 6 sports a 19:9 aspect ratio display, the Mi 8 has a slightly smaller 18.7:9 aspect ratio due to its broader notch at the top.

Performance and Software

Xiaomi and OnePlus both employ Snapdragon 845 SoC in their respective phones. It is the most-qualified smartphone brain in the industry right now, which assures that there shouldn’t be any performance lag or other related issues on the phones.

The Mi 8 comes in a 6GB RAM model with 64GB/128GB/256GB storage options. Unfortunately, you don’t get the 8GB variant of the phone. For that, you will have to upgrade to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, which is the same phone but with an in-display fingerprint sensor and 3D face unlock. And a higher price tag.

The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, comes in two variants: one with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage and the other with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. It also has a Marvel Avengers edition in India, which offers 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage.

As for the software part, the OnePlus 6 runs on the simple, light, yet efficient custom Oxygen OS on top of Android Oreo out-of-the-box. Whereas the Mi 8 runs on the Android Oreo-based MIUI 9. We like the OnePlus software better, but our preferences are subjective. You might very well be inclined towards MIUI 10.

Camera and Battery

The DxOMark score of 99 and camera specifications both speak in favor of Mi 8. The handset features a duo of 12-megapixel sensors on the rear with f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture lens, dual-tone LED flash, optical zoom, OIS, and support for 4k video recording. Its front camera is a 20-megapixel shooter with real-time AI portraits.

The OnePlus 6 sports a 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel secondary sensor with f/1.7 aperture lens, OIS and EIS support, LED flash and 4k video recording at 60fps. Up front, the camera features a 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens.

The battery backup on both phones is comparable but OnePlus 6 has a slight edge with its faster dash charging. The Mi 8 also has fast charging support.

Verdict

Both Mi 8 and OnePlus 6 integrate high-end specifications for less than high-end prices. The phones sport powerful chipsets, and cameras, and battery and display performance that matches up. Here are the things that each of them does it better over other:

Reasons to buy Xiaomi Mi 8

  • Lightweight and a tad thinner
  • Better optics
  • Advance face unlock
  • Dual-frequency GPS

Reasons to buy OnePlus 6

  • Dash charge is faster
  • Doesn’t look like an iPhone clone
  • Intuitive and lightweight UI
  • No flash sales
