Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 last week after its preview build leaked online. Microsoft is further adding to the Windows 11 features. Microsoft has now announced the addition of is the new Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) in Windows 11 for laptops.

What is a Dynamic refresh rate?

Dynamic refresh rate is first introduced by Microsoft in Windows 11 which will enable laptops to adjust display refresh rates dynamically. This means your windows 11 machine will be able to adjust the screen refresh rate according to content to balance performance and power consumption. The DRR feature doesn’t impact games.

Will my Window 11 system support Dynamic refresh rate?

Currently, DRR works only on laptops with supported hardware.

What’s the minimum hardware requirement to work on my laptop?

For DRR to kick in, your laptop display should support Variable refresh rate (VRR) and at least 120hz refresh rate.

How can I enable Dynamic refresh rate on my Windows 11 laptop?

Currently, DRR is is only available in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) Dev Channel. To enable it you need to follow the following steps:

  1. Open Settings, then select System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. For Choose a refresh rate, select a refresh rate that has Dynamic in the name.

Does DDR work across apps?

Microsoft said that it will be rolling out DRR support in selected apps first and later it will be added in more apps over time. Currently, these DRR is support by these apps:

  • Smoother inking: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Whiteboard, Microsoft Photos, Snip & Sketch, Drawboard PDF, Microsoft Sticky Notes, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft To Do, Inkodo
  • Smoother scrolling: Microsoft Office.
