We are months away from the expected launch of the Galaxy S25 series, but rumors about the smartphones, notably the Galaxy S25 Ultra, have already poured in. A couple of days ago, we heard about the improved clock speed of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 on the S25 Ultra. Now, a fresh leak provides early information about the flagship’s cameras, and fans might not like it.

Galaxy S25 Ultra Might Drop The 3x Telephoto Sensor

According to a new leak on X (formerly known as Twitter), Samsung is testing a prototype of the Galaxy S25 Ultra with three rear cameras: ultrawide, primary, and periscope. The 3x telephoto camera might not make it to the mix next year, as the 200MP primary camera might be able to generate a 3x photo with enough pixels to call it “lossless.”
We’ve seen several companies do this, including the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple, which provides a 2x lossless zoom on the regular iPhone 15. The camera crops in on the 48MP primary sensor, resulting in a reasonably well-detailed photo. However, it is still not as good as a phone can click with a dedicated zoom lens.

Samsung Might Improve The Main Camera To Provide In-Sensor 3x Crop
Further, the leak claims that Samsung has improved the light-capturing abilities of the 200MP primary camera. This should allow the camera to capture more details and provide an excellent digital crop. The third camera on the prototype is a larger sensor with variable zoom fixed at two focal lengths: between 4 and 5x zoom and between 6 and 7x zoom. However, the tweet also mentions that the ideal focal lengths are still being tested.
Last but not least, the prototype’s ultrawide camera doesn’t get an upgrade. However, since the phone is in the initial testing phase, we could expect Samsung to improve the overall resolution and image quality of the ultrawide sensor.

Popular Tipster And Industry Source Thinks Otherwise
While the new leak is among the first few to surface on the internet, popular tipster @UniverseIce contradicts it. He believes that Samsung will retain the four-camera setup on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. “Samsung won’t take the liberty of removing the 3x lens, but an upgrade is very possible,” writes the tipster in a tweet.
We also believe it would make no sense for the company to remove the 3x telephoto camera. The one thing that Ultra users love is the ability to click portrait shots at variable focal lengths, adding a nice aesthetic look to the image. The Space Zoom feature is fun to use, too. Hence, instead of removing or retaining the 3x telephoto camera, Samsung should move in the direction of improving it, perhaps by increasing its aperture or using a higher resolution sensor to capture more details.
