Last year, Google released the Pixel Watch 2 as an alternative to the popular flagship smartwatches out there. While the wearable got the basics right, it still didn’t feel quite as premium as its competitors, courtesy of a slightly less powerful chipset, thick bezels, and a 30Hz screen. And while you would expect Google to fix all the issues with the upcoming Pixel Watch 3, that isn’t exactly the case.

Pixel Watch 3 To Borrow Processors From Its Predecessor
According to a report by Android Headlines, Google’s Pixel Watch 3 will feature the same two chipsets as the current version. We’re talking about the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100 (SW5100) and a Cortex M33 co-chipset for handling the lighter tasks. While a dual-processor architecture often increases efficiency, it also indicates that the upcoming smartwatch won’t offer a performance upgrade compared to its predecessor.
The report also mentions that the upcoming smartwatch will ship with 2GB of SDRAM and 32GB of eMMC flash storage, which, again, is similar to last year’s model. Apart from performance, Pixel Watch 3‘s 41mm variant could pack a 307 mAh battery, similar to the Pixel Watch 2’s 306 mAh battery. However, the 45mm version could come with a larger 420 mAh cell that provides a slightly better usage time.

However, Pixel Watch 3 Gets A Better Screen
The silver lining, however, is the support for a 60Hz refresh rate screen (on both the 41mm and the 45mm versions). In the past, the Pixel Watch versions have had a 30Hz screen, which felt slightly outdated compared to an Apple Watch and a Samsung Galaxy Watch. Nonetheless, the Pixel Watch 3 should solve the issue with a dynamic approach. The display will switch to 60Hz when owners use it and return to 1Hz for the always-on display mode.
Besides the refresh rate, the Pixel Watch 3 is also getting a bump in terms of the peak brightness it can achieve. Both variants of the upcoming smartwatch can do 2,000 nits and, at the same time, fall back to 1 nit for users who sleep while wearing the device. Moreover, the Pixel Watch 3 is getting a few upgrades over its predecessor, and we’re still excited to see the wearable at the Made by Google event on August 13, 2024.
