Reportedly, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is working on a new feature that looks to empower the Group administrators. The feature nicknamed as ‘Restricted Groups’ puts the group admin in the driver seat and allow him/her to oversee the activities of the group.

The update came from a reliable source WABetaInfo, who have often, in the past, leaked news on most of the upcoming WhatsApp features that is now part of the messenger. According to them, the messaging platform has submitted the “Restricted Groups” setting via Google Play Beta programme in the version 2.17.430.

Restricted Group Feature

Basically, the new feature – once rolled out, will give special power to the administrator in the group chat. He/she can restrict any member from sending text messages, photographs, GIFs, or voice messages. Once restricted, you can use the ‘Message Admin’ button to send a message to the group.

You will be able to send a message to the administrator of the group, who will ultimately decide whether it will be seen by other members of the group – or rejected completely. All in all, the group admin will be able to censor group chat.

The Restricted Group allows anyone in a group chat to enable the feature with an administrator’s authority. The settings can be changed every 72 hours, thereby silencing a group member for a few hours, instead of removing him/her permanently.

The same source also revealed that “WhatsApp will prevent the group creator to be deleted from the group by other administrators. This will help the group creator to have the full control of the group.· The administrators will be able to choose if other participants can modify the subject of the group, its icon and its description.”

WhatsApp group chats have often criticized for abusive content, spreading fake news, or sharing hatred content. Well, the new feature will to an extent help admins control the environment.
