Vivo has taken has added yet another feather in its cap with the announcement of its Apple Face ID counterpart. The Chinese OEM took the centre stage at MWC Shanghai 2018 and announced its Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Sensing Technology that can capture 300,000 sensor points. The Vivo’s numbers are 10 times more than the Structured Light Technology, used in Face ID on iPhone X.

The new technology enables new opportunities in facial, gesture and motion recognition, and aims to take 3D photography and augmented reality (AR) to next level.

What is Vivo TOF 3D Sensing Technology? What are Its Features?

The TOF 3D Sensing Technology comes with a depth of information sensor that enables 3D mapping at up to three metres from the phone while having a smaller baseline than traditional technology that is called “structured light”. The mapping can then be used to create an Animoji or Memoji-like AR stickers.

Vivo claims that technology is also simpler and smaller in structure, and offer more flexibility when embedded in a smartphone. Further, the firm is testing the technology to integrate it with apps and open up new possibilities for entertainment as well as work.

Apart from facial recognition, the emerging technology with AR capabilities could take users one step further and allow them to try on clothes virtually with enhanced 3D virtual fitting. It can also track gestures for mixed reality (MR) games and provide an entirely new way to immerse yourself in a virtual world through MR games.

By combining AI recognition with TOF 3D Sensing Technology’s precise understanding of what it sees, users can even capture entire objects using 3D modelling. This technology can be used to scan lesson props for education, or even help scan critical parts of the body for medical purposes.

Vivo hasn’t announced any specific launch date of the technology nor it has revealed which future smartphone models will come with TOF 3D sensing technology. Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition and Oppo Find X are some of the Android phones that come with 3D sense technology.

“From last year’s debut of In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, the recent launch of the truly bezel-less Vivo NEX, to our ground-breaking TOF 3D Sensing technology, we continue to forge ahead and evolve towards the truly intelligent future by opening new ways for the AI to help the consumer.”
