Top Six US Intelligence Agency Chiefs Warn Against Using Huawei and ZTE Phone

What could be seen as another blow to Huawei’s aspiration of entering the US market, heads of as many as six intelligence agencies have warned their fellow countrymen from using products from Chinese tech giants Huawei and ZTE.

The six intelligence agencies include chief of the CIA, FBI, NSA and the director of national intelligence. According to CNBC report, the US intelligence community made their reservation against Chinese giants in a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday.

FBI director Chris Wray in his testimony said that the government was “deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks. the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information. And it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage.”

This is not exactly out of the blue as various government agencies in the past have also raised concerns about Huawei and its founder’s proximity to China’s People Liberation Army. It’s worth mentioning that the telecom giant was founded by a former army engineer. Back in 2014, Huawei was barred from filing for government contracts in the US.

Huawei official spokesperson refuted such concerns and said that Huawei poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor.

“Huawei is aware of a range of U.S. government activities seemingly aimed at inhibiting Huawei’s business in the U.S. market. Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production capabilities,” Huawei spokesman said in a statement.
