Tecno Camon i2X Quick Review with Pros and Cons

Transsion Holdings, a Smartphone manufacturer that owns and operates several brands including Spice, Infinix, and Tecno, recently launched its first notch-display phone, the Tecno Camon i2X.

Camon i2X is basically a selfie phone meant for offline markets. The handset looks attractive and brandishes an interesting spec-sheat. But how is the overall experience of using the Camon i2X?  Well, we have been living with the phone for the last week, and have gathered our opinions and findings in the Tecno Camon i2X quick review that follows.

The phone is priced at ₹12,499 and will be available in three colors: Aqua Blue, Midnight Black, and Champagne Gold.

Tecno Camon i2X Design and Display

The Tecno Camon i2X boasts a 6.2-inch HD display with a wide notch. Adhering to the contemporary trends, the screen is the most of what’s on the front. The notch at the top houses the selfie camera, earpiece and front flash – which oddly doubles as LED notification light.

The back panel has glass finish but the material used is actually glossy plastic – which is fine at this price point.

The back still attracts lots of smudges and it is best that you use a protective case. Tecno bundles a good quality one in the box.

The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back and is pretty responsive. It comes with a regular micro USB Type-A port and has a bottom firing speaker which is adequately loud. The bottom edge also accommodates a 3.5 mm jack.

The phone has a dedicated card slot and supports Dual SIM Dual VoLTE.

Tecno Camon i2X Camera

Now coming to the camera module, we have a dual camera setup on the rear consisting of a 13MP (f/1.8) sensor coupled with a 5MP (f/2.4) depth sensor.  On the front, we have a 16MP (f/2.0) sensor with Flash and boasts features such as AI Camera, Beauty mode, Bokeh mode, and Panorama.

We will continue testing the camera before we pass on our final verdict, but as of now, we can see that the camera isn’t anything out of the ordinary. Indoors, both the front and rear camera struggle to capture details. Outdoor shots in proper lighting are useable but are hardly impressive.

Tecno Camon i2X Performance and Software

The phone encompasses a 2GHz octa-core MT6762 mobile platform and runs on a 4GB RAM. It comes with an internal memory of 64 GB, of which nearly 55 GB is free for end users.

Compared to online alternatives in the same budget, the chipset feels a bit lackluster. Afterall, this is the same chipset that Xiaomi offers in Redmi 6 that costs about half as much.

Having said that, the day to day performance on the phone felt reasonable in the first week of usage. A few high-end games are playable and UI transitions were mostly smooth. This could, however, change with longterm usage.

The HiOS 4.1 software running on the phone is based on Android 8.1. It has certain preloaded apps like Facebook, Opera News, and Instagram which can, however, be uninstalled in case you do not wish to use them. The Face unlock is very fast but not as secure. The phone recognizes registered face and unlocks even when eyes are closed.

It comes with an inbuilt app called CarlCare for providing the users with after sales support. The phone is powered by a 3750 mAh battery bundled with a 5V-1.2A charger which takes its own sweet time filling up the tank.

Tecno Camon i2X: Verdict

Several online brands are now expanding their base offline. This has vastly diminished the gap between the two markets and the way they operate. The online competition includes phones like Realme 2 Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro that are way ahead in the game and some of these options are also available offline.

Tecno Camon i2X plays by the old rules. The phone looks good, has a vibrant display, and a long lasting battery. The camera performance, however, isn’t much to write home about. Buyers who examine it in a storefront will surely be tempted, but it’s about time the offline players step-up.
